The song of the morning is “What a Difference a Day Makes.” We have a breeze. The humidity is much less than it has been the whole week. I have doors and windows open. The air from the window behind me is even a bit chilly. Earlier I did see a bit of blue but now the sky is gray. It is only 72˚ and the high will be just 75˚. That’s delightful, gray skies or not.

Sometimes, when I wake up, I have no idea what day of the week it is. It’s not all that important in the scheme of things, but I admit to being somewhat curious. Mostly what I did the day before is the key, but if it was a sloth day, I have to think a bit harder. It was so much easier when I worked. The days never blended together. Which day of the week made a difference then. It doesn’t anymore.

I was busy on the deck yesterday. I replaced dead with living plants in the smallest pots. I watered all the plants and filled the bird feeders. The birds seem to prefer the feeders hanging from tree limbs. I still need to get the fountain working and put the new lights on the deck rail for the spawns to eat.

I’m beginning to feel like Old Mother Hubbard. My cupboards are bare. When I open the fridge, I’m blinded by the light as the fridge is mostly empty, but I have some cheese so all is not lost.

I think the kids in my neighborhood have been kidnapped. My advice is not to pay the ransom. The quiet is wonderful. I hear only the singing birds. If this makes me a crotchety old lady, then so be it.

I really like hot dogs in toasted rolls. They are best grilled or fried though I’ll even eat them boiled. At Fenway they do both. First the dogs are boiled then fried. I’m not a fan of kraut on my dogs, but I do like chopped onions. I’m a mustard and piccalilli aficionado but relish will do. I like all sorts of mustards though yellow mustard is low on my list. When I was a kid, yellow mustard was all we had. No one ever used ketchup on a hot dog. It was for burgers, one of my all time favorite foods. I, however, am partial to mayonnaise on my burgers. I even use it with French fries.

I haven’t had seafood for a while. I’m thinking scallops or fish and chips. I have to go out later so I’m going to treat myself at Captain Frosty’s. Their onion rings are the best. I’m already salivating at the thought.

I woke up to sun and now it is cloudy. The official report says a partly cloudy day with 78˚ as the high. Weather reports never seem optimistic. This is a half full, half empty sort of prediction. The optimist would say partly sunny.

It hasn’t rained much in a while. We had spitting rain one morning, but that’s about it. The cape, though, is not under a drought warning. Neither is the western part of the state, but the rest of the state is. I miss the summer rain.

I love onion rings, not the thick ones but the skinny ones with the light batter. Two seafood restaurants I really like serve them, and I always order a plate with onion rings. Lately I’ve ordered clams. Neither restaurant serves clams without the bellies. Those are for the tourists. The plates come heaped with clams, onion rings and French fries. I always eat the French fries last because sometimes I run out of room and would never want to leave a clam or an onion ring.

At a pub or a similar eatery, I usually order cheeseburgers covered with cheddar cheese. They usually come topped with lettuce and tomatoes with French fries on the side. I use mayonnaise on my French fries and my cheeseburger. I am not a big ketchup fan. I don’t know why but I consider ketchup on hot dogs and scrambled eggs as trevesties.

I have the TV on, unusual for me during the day. I’m finding most of the commercials are aimed at old people by age, not disposition. I have seen several about buying life insurance not dependent on physical condition or how old you are. A couple of commercials are touting the I’ve fallen and can’t get up alert button. The companies must figure only older people are home during the day.

I got all my errands finished yesterday. This morning I made my bed, and now I’m done.

A blue sky and lots of sun belie the prediction of snow. I’d be skeptical bout the storm except every weather cast says the same thing. We are getting the most snow here on the cape, but luckily the amount has been reduced from 6-12 inches to 6-8 inches. Dangerous winds and blizzard conditions are also predicted.

Food is on my mind today. Peapod came yesterday and my fridge is filled. Before that delivery it seemed only condiments were left. Pickles, I have pickles of all sorts, and I have mustards of all flavors. I have relish and piccalilli and ketchup which I seldom use. Thai cucumber sauce, Thai peanut dressing and Jungle Safari Sauce are some of the odd bottles on the side shelf. I have a chuck of salt from Columbia’s salt mine on the bottom shelf. I keep it there so it won’t melt. Bottles of jalapeño peppers, both diced and sliced, are also on the door shelf. I use them all the time in salsas, quesadillas, sandwiches and scrambled eggs. Mayonnaise, always Cain’s, and horseradish sauce are two of my favorites. I use the horseradish sauce on hot dogs and sandwiches. It adds a nice bite. A snowman bottle holds maple syrup, the real stuff. I use it on my French toast and sometimes on chicken I bake in the oven. Chicken and maple go together well. Every now and then I check the shelf and combine jars of the same stuff and toss jars with little or nothing left. I have no idea why I put them back, habit I guess.

My cabinets have been cleaned within the last year. Stuff long expired, we’re talking years here, were tossed. I organized like items to make them easier to find, made one shelf all baking ingredients and another, a smaller shelf, food coloring, extracts and sprinkles of all colors. I was able to free the top shelf for dishes, for my Christmas dishes. That made me feel most accomplished. Empty shelves in this house are difficult to come by.

Today will be a sloth day.
