“I make no secret of the fact that I would rather lie on a sofa than sweep beneath it.”

March 14, 2016

I woke up late this morning and rushed over to my neighbor’s house in record time for our Monday’s at 10. My back was so bad I stopped three or four times before I got there. Today is cold and dank and doesn’t bolster my spirits in any way. I am sick and tired of winter and the few days of pseudo spring we’ve had.

The first load of wash is in the machine. I got tired of looking at it leaning against the cellar door. A second load sits on the floor waiting its turn. Adam and Eve before the apple had it easy.

When I was growing up, I never realized how much work my mother actually did around the house. I’d see her making dinner but that was about it. While I was at school, she cleaned, vacuumed, made beds, washed clothes and ironed. My empty bureau drawers would magically fill. My bed would be made and my room cleaned. I never gave any of that much thought. I don’t think I ever said thank you. I just supposed it was what mothers did.

I am living by myself which I quite enjoy. There are no expectations. Today I might do this or I might do that or I might do neither. I make lists only when I have lolled far too long. I believe a written list of chores is binding much like Moses must have felt walking down the mountain with the ten commandments. If the chore is there before my eyes, I have to do it though that’s where the comparison with Moses ends. His was mostly a don’t do list though there were a couple of have to’s. I am quite faithful to finishing my lists, and I cross off each completed item with a flourish.

Coffee was going on hiatus today but then I got started and the words just poured out. My two typing fingers had quite the work-out. I do have to stop, though, my first load of laundry is done and needs to go into the dryer. A woman’s work is never done, sort of.

The day is getting lighter as the sun struggles to appear. It is in the high 30’s but the rest of the week will be in the 40’s and one day may hit 50˚. I think the forecast is worthy of song, “We’re having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave.”

Some things just drive me crazy. Men wearing baseball caps inside is one of them. It is old school, I know, to expect men to take their hats off in a restaurant, but I do. Some people, mostly of the male variety, shovel their food into their mouths. They hold their forks like a piece of equipment, like that shovel I mentioned. Little kids doing it I understand as they’re still in process, but I don’t understand adult shovelers. Pocketbooks on the table at restaurants drive me crazy. Texting has its place but not while we’re eating. How about some table talk, some conversation?  Catch up with one another. Mumbling doesn’t count. One of my former relatives ate with her mouth open. I could never sit across from her. She obviously didn’t have the constant reminder, “Chew with your mouth closed,”the way we did. My mother was big into manners.

I admit we did some things just to drive one or both of our parents crazy. Shuffling our feet as we walked was one of them. My father inevitably yelled, “Pick up your feet.” We did literally and that made it even worse. Tapping a fork on the table was more than my mother could handle. She’d come right over and take the fork out of the offender’s hand. I admit I am a tapper, but I have never intended malice. It just happens when I’m engrossed in something like figuring out a crossword puzzle word. “Stop tapping!” from my mother would pull me from my reverie.

I live alone and even drive myself crazy at times. That’s the worst.

Yup, I’ve been nailed. The artists mentioned include Dylan, Bert Jansch, The Pogues, Aled Jones, B.B. King, Andy Williams and Sarah Moule. All of the offending material was removed by WordPress.

I will figure a way around this but will refrain from posting music until I do.

“And God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light, but the Electricity Board said He would have to wait until Thursday to be connected.”

February 5, 2016

I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t some yet unknown connection between humans and hibernating animals. This morning I first woke up at 8:30. It was pouring and the rain was pounding the roof and windows. It was not inviting so I got comfy again and  went back to sleep with Fern and Gracie as bedmates. Jump forward two hours. I finally stirred and dragged myself out of bed. It was still raining. I ran out for the papers. That’s when I noticed the rain was turning to snow. Little beads of ice were on the grass and the walkway. When I let Gracie out a few minutes later, I saw the ice on the back stairs and immediately threw out the deicer. I don’t want a repeat of last week when Gracie fell.

The prediction is for 4 to 8 inches of wet, heavy snow. It has already covered the lawns, the roads and the tops of the branches. It will snow all day into the evening.

I’m still hooked. Snow demands my attention. I like to watch it fall. I love the world covered in white. All the blemishes disappear.

I just lost my electricity for about five minutes. I didn’t panic. I groaned. I’m thrilled it returned so quickly, but now I have to go around and reset clocks on the appliances. I suppose that a minor complaint compared to the loss of electricity.

My iPad is locked. I forgot my password and tried too many combinations so it locked me out thinking I was an iPad thief. Now I have to go hunting to find out how to get into that infernal machine.

I keep opening the front door to check the amount of snow on the ground. It is falling quickly. The backyard is a winter wonderland. Some branches are already lower to the ground burdening but he wet snow.

It just happened again-the electricity went off for a few minutes. Now I’m getting nervous.

I am a picture straightener, and I want my clocks in sync so I just corrected the ones in the kitchen, a mistake. The electricity just went off for a third time. Now I’m making sure my iPhone is charged, the lantern is here with me and the heat is high for just a bit to warm the house just in case. I am not happy.

“Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life.”

December 26, 2015

Okay, I am finally good,  but I am a Typhoid Mary. My brother-in-law, nephew, niece, her two kid’s and one of my nephew’s kids are all sick.

We are staying close to home today. It snowed yesterday and is 0 degrees right now. The day should warm up to around 25.

Christmas Day was fun, a day spent with family. We opened presents, watched a couple of Christmas  movies and had dinner. I loved seeing the kids all excited for Christmas. There were ohs and ahs a plenty. We were shown every gift and were expected to clap and we did.

Gracie is doing well. She had her dog food Christmas dinner yesterday and lots of company. Christine, my neighbor, stays awhile each visit. I’m glad she’s happy.

I am sorry I haven’t posted music, but I did have good intentions. This has not been the Christmas we all planned, but being with family has been the best part.
