“Did you ever wonder if the person in the puddle is real, and you’re just a reflection of him?”

It was cold enough this morning that Gracie cocooned, usually one of her winter tricks. She waits until I’m in the bathroom then pushes the covers to the bottom of the bed and nestles in the blankets so most of her body is covered, all except her head and chest. She looked pretty cozy this morning.

This is one of the coolest summers I can remember. We have hit 80˚ maybe three or four times. The rest of the days have been in the 70’s. Perfect weather. Usually August is humid and disgusting, but it hasn’t been except when we’re expecting rain. The nights have been in the 60’s. I have used my AC in the bedroom maybe five times all summer and the central air maybe three or four times. I’m wearing socks as my feet were cold. What’s with that?

Even though we haven’t had much rain, the lawns are green and beautiful. Usually by this time there are browns spots, and the lawns look dry and tired, but not this summer. When the rains come, they are substantial. Last week we got 3 inches in a single storm. Low spots in the roads became lakes or ponds as there are no gutters and no sewers for run-offs. Just up the street is one of those spots, and it always floods. This time it was the deepest I’d seen it in a long while. Cars went around the block to avoid it. After the water disappeared there was mud and sludge across the road.

I used to love to ride my bike through puddles, the bigger the better. As the water cascaded on each side of the bike, I’d take my feet off the pedals and extend my legs so they’d get wet from the rush of water. I aimed for every puddle I saw, and I laughed out loud for the joy of the puddle and the wave.

Today is one of those days which comes around every now and then. It’s gently raining, a cool breeze is blowing, and I can hear the swish of the leaves as the branches wave back and forth. The birds are singing right beside my window. The animals are so deeply sleeping I can hear their breathing. My coffee was perfectly brewed. During my shower I noticed I had lost an earring during the night. I went looking but couldn’t find it. My guess is it fell under the bed, and I’ll need a flashlight to see it. I did find the back which I usually never find. I was a bit put out as I like the earrings, but I let it go and went looking for another pair in my bureau drawer in boxes where I hardly look. It took me the longest time to go through the boxes as many of the earring had memories attached, and I just sat and let the memories wash over me. There was a pair of golden cable cars my dad had brought back from San Francisco. In one box was a Christmas gift card signed by Santa, something my mother always did. Each Christmas she gave the three of us new earrings, and that year I had tucked away the card. The antique cameo earrings my mother also gave me one Christmas were there. I remember how pleased she was that I loved them so much. I went through everything in that drawer. It took me about forty minutes. The time was so well worth the memories.

I came downstairs. The house was dark the way I like it on rainy days when it feels as it the house is keeping me close and warm. I set the coffee brewing and went to get the papers. It was raining just a bit. When I came in, I got a cup of coffee, turned on the light in the den and read the papers. I did both crossword puzzles and the cryptogram. They seemed easy today. Playing in the background was my Joni Mitchell Pandora station, and all the songs were exactly right.

I am staying home today because I can’t think of a better place to be. Today is perfect.

I wish you all could have joined me on the deck this morning for coffee. The catbird dropped by, lots of nuthatches and a giant crow who preened. First he rubbed his bill against the rough pine bark then he spread one wing and cleaned a pinion at a time. I came in, got my camera and went back outside. He posed.

The day is wonderful; I might even say perfect with the sun and a slight breeze; it’s probably the same sort of morning Adam and Eve woke up to before the serpent intervened. I always wonder about Adam and Eve. How the heck did the story of their fall make it all the way to us? When I was a kid, we’d play gossip, the game of whispering a phrase from one person to another until the last person repeated what he or she heard. The end result never resembled in any way the starting phrase. I’m supposed to believe oral tradition carried the story of Adam and Eve through the ages. I’m guessing his real name might have been Chuck and she was Louise. I’m still thinking it was an apple, red being such a provocative color. Did all the animals speak or just the serpent?

My world is really noisy on Saturday. It is mow the lawn day everywhere. Kids are outside playing and dogs bark and bark, at what I have no idea. Gracie once in a while joins them, but she is far more content lying asleep in the shade of the trees overhanging the deck.

I have my book, In the Woods, coffee waiting to be iced and a comfy chair. If you want me for anything, I’ll be on the deck.
