Dory Previn, the lyricist for three Oscar-nominated songs who as a composer and performer mined her difficult childhood, bouts of mental illness and a very public divorce to create a potent and influential personal songbook, died on Tuesday at her home in Southfield, Mass. She was 86.

This song is from Dory’s 1971 album Mythical Kings and Iguanas. She has appeared here on Coffee before and I described her as overlooked, missed by many. She wrote the lyrics to Valley of the Dolls which for some is Dory’s only claim to fame. That would change if people listened to her albums.

My friend sblake reminded me today is Dory’s 85th birthday, and I’m sending warm wishes.

This is the final song on the 1971 album Mythical Kings and Iguanas. It first reprises the title song Mythical Kings and then moves to a refrain from Lady With the Braid, "going home is such a ride, going home is such a ride."
