“The sky grew darker, painted blue on blue, one stroke at a time, into deeper and deeper shades of night.”
Yesterday was both a wonderful day and a strange one. The strange part was in the late afternoon. I’d bring the stuff outside I needed for dinner then it would start raining, and I’d pick everything up, including the heavy wooden ironing board, and bring it back inside. The rain, more of a sprinkle, would stop and I’d carry all my stuff back outside then the rain would start again, and I’d haul everything back inside. The third time the rain came I just put everything under the umbrella, made a drink and sat listening to the rain fall on the umbrella, one of the best summer sounds. My shirt and I were soaked from the humidity and I was already tired, but the sound of the rain was calming as were a few sips of my drink. When the rain finally stopped, I got everything ready. The corn was shucked, the meat ready for the grill, the appetizer finished and the serving pieces set out on the ironing board. I was exhausted. My friends came and we sat a bit enjoying the appetizers. We did ourselves proud: muhammara, flatbread pizza and pot stickers. Not much later I had to start dinner, but the pork was slow roasting so I had time to sit. Dinner was pork tenderloin, salad and fresh corn from the farmers’ market. By then the rain was gone and we could see blue skies and a bit of sun. It would be movie night after all.
Everyone loved Westworld. For an old movie, it has held up fairly well. The audience even applauded at the end. I had cleaned up between dinner and the movie so there wasn’t a whole lot left to do. Clay, aka AV boy, brought in all the equipment and Tony brought in the ironing board. I said goodnight to my guests, finished the last of the cleaning and sat. I was so tired I slept until 10:30 this morning.
I loved last night being with friends, having a great dinner and watching a movie. It was such fun. We got to loll outside on a pretty night with a canopy of stars, eat malted milk balls and nonpareils and talk if we wanted, no hushers on the deck. There was a breeze, but it was a warm night, no sweatshirt needed. I thought it a perfect summer evening.
Today is a do nothing day as I am exhausted, and my back is loudly complaining. It is supposed to rain, and I think it will. The day has darkened and the wind, from the north, seems to portent a coming storm. I think I’ll like today.

We finally got a huge thunder storm here and the temperature dropped dramatically. It was so nice to finally be able to breathe again 🙂 But tomorrow will be hot again and mor thunder will arrive. Tuesday will be as hot as last week and now we’ll have that high humidity as well, can’t say I’m looking forward to it 🙂
I’m keeping an eye on a neighbors cottage and cats and I went over to feed the cats and check that the electricity worked as it should after the thunder. No power and I walked up to the attic and checked everything, turning of and on the switches even though they were as they should. I went downstairs again and everything worked as it should but I couldn’t say whay 🙂 My closest neighbor then told me that we just had a power break, at the exact moment I checked the electricity 🙂 So the power started again when I came downstairs 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
It is raining right now, one of those quiet summer rains. It is nice.
Last night I had to use the AC in the bedroom so Gracie and I would be comfortable. She, like most pugish faced dogs, doesn’t do well in the heat. The Ac makes her comfortable enough to sleep.
I would have said you tripped the switches upstairs. That’s what I have to do when the electricity goes out in some part of the house. It is easier than changing fuses. How funny what it was the exact moment you were in the house.
Have a great day!

Hi Kat,
Today the dogs and I went up to New Hampshire to visit my brother. Piki Dog had a panic attack about an hour into the drive and I had to stop and walk them both around until he chilled out. After that he decided he was not going to ride in the booster seat. He was going to sit next to Rocky on the console. It was a bit crowded but worked out okay.
I couldn’t find my brother’s road and went many miles out of the way before I turned around again. I had no cell phone signal up there so I couldn’t call. Just I decided I was going to give it up and go home, I passed the sign to his road. It was a driveway in someone’s yard.
His little cottage was lovely. I saw Bald eagles flying past. I heard loons. There were blueberries in the woods for me and chipmunks for the dogs. There were Indian Pipes in the woods.
It poured buckets several times. After the rain stopped, clouds of moisture would float through the tree tops like mist.
The dogs were perfectly behaved. Big sigh of relief.
We are all on the couch now. The dogs are asleep and I’m catching up with the internet world.
Your movie night sounds great. Malted milk balls, nonpareils and a movie on a perfect summer evening can’t be beat.
Enjoy the evening.

Hi Caryn,
It is good that Piki Dog sees Rocky as his car buddy. I am trying to imagine the two dogs on the console. Gracie from the start has liked the car. She sleeps as soon as we hit the highway.
It was serendipity when you found the road. That area must be beyond the civilized world not to have cell reception.
It sounds beautiful, and I would have loved to have seen bald eagles, and I love the songs of loons. I’m surprised Indian pipes are around this late in the summer. Usually I see them only in the spring. I think they are the most beautiful, delicate flowers.
Nice the boys behaved for you.
It was a wonderful night and movies outside are such fun.
Have a great day tomorrow.

We had a good weekend in Franconia, NH. Our friends live in a 200-year-old house with a panoramic view of Cannon Mt. Their property has 80+ acres of fields and woods and the nearest neighbor about 500 feet down the road is the Robert Frost farm, open to the public for viewing and poetry readings. We swam in Echo Lake and ate and drank all weekend. The weather on Sunday was like yours, off and on downpours. On the way back we stopped at the Basin, a Flume-like attraction but free. Then on Rt. 93 it was stop and go from the Lakes Region on south. I think 50% of the cars had Ma. Plates and the rest were from Ct. Or R.I.
Peg has follow up arm therapy today and I have several tables to re-finish for clients.
How about sharing that direct number for Comcast? I had an issue with our cable box two weeks ago and Comcast, after several
disconnects and conflicting answers, told me I needed a new box, or a technician to come to the house ($$$). I solved it myself and we do not need a new box. Maybe I should work for the cable company (or not!).

Bill,
It sounds like a really great time. A weekend away is like a whole vacation. That hop use makes me envious though I suspect I’d hate the upkeep. I have to use your match trick again as the screws have fallen out of the cabinet door. That is on my god o list today.
Here is the number: 1-800-266-2278

Thanks for the number.
Yes, there is a lot of upkeep on that house, but she retired in July so they have time now.
Make sure you use wood glue on those matchsticks. Toothpicks will also work

Bill,
I’ll remember the glue.
I liked handing over a signed check when the work got done. I do wish, though, I had your talent.
