“In the morning I woke like a sloth in the fog.”
I am going back to bed for a bit hoping to shake this malaise. My heat is cranking, but I am still cold, never a good sign. We went out for breakfast today, but we should have stayed home in bed warm and cozy under the comforter. It is raining: a cold, heavy rain. This morning the ground had an inch or two of slush. I didn’t leave footprints on the lawn when I got the papers but I left a trail which filled with water as soon as I took another step. The day has little to commend it. The best I can say is it isn’t snow.
On my way to breakfast I noticed cars on the side streets still running and filled with parents and kids. They were waiting for the school bus. Not a single little kid waited in the rain. I would have had no choice but to walk to school. Most of us always did. On days like today we’d hurry to school not drawn by the idea of learning but by the warmth of the schoolroom and the hopes of getting dry. We’d hang up our coats then walk into class with red cheeks and runny noses from the cold. I don’t remember math or any other subjects on those sorts of days. I just remember the lights being on and the rain hitting the windows.
My house is dark except for the laptop’s monitor. I can hear the rain. It is heavier than it has been all morning. The temperature is too warm for snow so it will stay rainy all day into tomorrow. I’m content to be inside. I have cards to write, laundry to do and books to read.
I am tending toward a sloth day being, as I am, out of sorts so I’m going to finish now so I can change into my cozy flannels, my slippers and my sweatshirt, the accepted uniform for a winter sloth.

Hi Kat,
We got some snow up here last night. It’s still hanging around though it has been raining all morning. The snow on the ground is very juicy right now.
My house is lit. There are two lights on in the living room and I’m thinking of adding a third. The plants in that corner need it. The lights in the kitchen and bath are on as well (but the bathroom light is on 24/7/365). There are three lights on in the cellar because… laundry. Bleh. This dark time of the year is most hateful when the light is hidden by clouds.
I’m taking an astronomy class online but I haven’t been able to see the stars at all since I started. I can look up but I’ll have to take their word for it that a particular star is where they say it is at that moment. 🙂
I don’t have to go anywhere so I’m not going to go anywhere today. I will knit and watch Rocky sleep on the other end of the couch.

Being such a tropical area, we got rain and now nothing. It is still cold though.
I have plenty of light with the window lights on all the time. If one goes out, I can tell right away as it is so dark. My street has no street lights so it is dark most nights.
I love looking at the stars. In Ghana the stars were blanketing the sky. It was like the sky was all one star there were so many. I remember falling asleep outside and seeing the falling stars every night.
My friend is coming to cut my hair later then we’ll go somewhere for dinner. We usually have Chinese afterwards, but I want something different.

Although the major roads are almost clear, I am taking a day from work to make up for a travel day last weekend. All the school districts are still closed because they’re parking lots are like ice rinks and the danger of falling icicles. Unfortunately, I am answering work e-mails and phone calls, but I didn’t have to get up and drive in the semi frozen crud. We had a stretch of over 56 hours below freezing in a place where no one is really equipped for that kind of cold coupled with four inches of ice. Hopefully the 2,000 people who were stranded at the DFW airport and those stranded in their cars on the interstate highways yesterday will be able to continue their journey today. If I have to travel I avoid changing planes in Chicago in the winter for the same reason that people got stuck here in Dallas over the weekend. 🙂 Go figure?

I’m glad you are at home and safe. With roads so bad, home is the best place to be. I have seen pictures of people driving on all that ice who haven’t had a whole lot of practice doing it. It is both comical and scary.
I have to think being stranded at the airport has to be horrible. I did read where free hot drinks and sandwiches were being given out at Dallas/Forth Worth. Nice gesture!

The Christmas Box
As the season speeds towards us, my mind turns to traditions and phrases that have long since departed.
My Father would refer to the Christmas Box which was a somewhat patronizing term for tipping “tradesmen” as well as the postman. As a young Hedley I think I conceptualized that he was actually handing over a box of some description rather than a cluster of pounds, shillings and pence. He is gone and I haven’t heard the term in years.
Tomorrow – other than going to Harrods, how did we get our needs to Father Christmas ?

Did you put your lists in the fire so the ashes would blow up to Father Christmas? I know it is the tradition in some country.
I haven’t ever heard the term Christmas Box so now I’ll understand if I read it. I think it a nicer way to describe the annual tips.

All 12-16 inches of snow we got this weekend is goping to melt away these coming days. What was the use of lettinmg this garbage fall down then? The roads were a nightmare and they won’t be better when the snow melts and the water will freeze on the road just to make it even worse 🙂
I would love to have a sloth day or more correct a sloth week now, But I shouldn’t complain, it looks like we’ll have two weeks off during Christmas and New Year.

That would be a huge amount of snow for us. If it happened overnight, the schools would be closed until the plowing could get done. The worst is driving on the ice.
I loved Christmas vacation. For a couple of years we got off early so they could see how much money was saved by closing the schools and turning down the heat. Those were the best times as I baked and wrapped and got so such done. Now I have all the time and I am so behind the time.
