If you think dogs can’t count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them.
My PC has gone to PC hell so I’ve disconnected its lifelines and will haul it to my computer guru today. I’m thinking it needs a new hard drive. Luckily, all my music, pictures and a variety of files were backed-up. I learned that lesson before this.
Today is a delight with a cool breeze and little humidity, but that’s supposed to change. Last night the weatherman said showers. I’m hoping he’s right.
The outside will get my attention today. I have a new holder for bird feeders which goes into the ground and has a squirrel baffle on the rod. The spawn of Satan will try to climb and the baffle will slide him right back down again. I figure it will be fun to watch! Nothing better than a frustrated spawn. The rod had six hooks so I’ll pick up a hanging plant or two. Another chore is the front garden where I noticed some flowers are picnic food for the bugs so they need to be sprayed. I’m thinking any excuse to stay outside today!
Last night I had dinner at my friends’ house. Tony barbecued burgers for us and two small burgers: one for Darci, my friends’ dog, and one for Gracie. When I got home, I gave Gracie half and left the rest in the bag on the counter. It disappeared, but this morning I saw the empty bag in the backyard. It seems Gracie is a counter surfer!
My dog Duke, the Boxer I had when I was growing up, was a great counter surfer. Nothing was safe. Once he grabbed the Sunday roast, and my brother and I had to pry his mouth open to save the meat. That was when I learned that tooth marks can be pressed out of uncooked roasts. My Shauna, also a Boxer, was a wonderful counter surfer. She could reach all the way to the wall. One time she stole a cake cooling on the counter and ate half of it so I had to hurry out and buy dessert as half a cake wouldn’t do. Shauna was also a trash bag mauler. If I left the bag on the kitchen floor, Shauna could break any world’s record in opening the bag and taking any food. I’d find trash on my bed because she used to haul it upstairs for reasons I never fathomed. Gracie, who has access to the outside through her door, takes the trash out if she’s been bag surfing. Every now and then I go out and collect her trash. I always feel a bit like her maid.

Im feeling a little down today, perhaps because the team didnt show up. it certainly would be difficult to argue that the Italians didnt deserve to win and at least England avoid a thrashing at the hands of Birgit’s team on Thursday
I hope you dont mind if I post this video

My Dear Hedley,
I look up the final score last night and was disappointed at the results! I was pulling for England all the way.
As I mentioned below, I loved everything about this-the music and the dancing!!!!
Post away!!

I’m sorry for your team, Hedley, desperately waited for goals…
But thanks for playing over 120 minutes, so the italian team
might still be tired on Thursday 😉 Unfortunately I can’t see
this game, but hopefully find some time to listen to car radio.

I’m sorry about yesterday! I hoped so much that they would win. Well soon they’ll all try to reach the World Championships and I’m pretty sure they’ll reach it 🙂

Christer and Birgit
Thank you for your kind thoughts. At the end of the day the Italian team were vastly superior both in terms of creativity and technical skills.
It seems very unfair that the German team has two extra days of rest before facing Italy on Thursday, but Birgit, your team has been playing spectacular football – why cant you see the match on Thursday ?
June 25, 2012 at 3:15 pm
1.Yes, the two extra days are unfair, but … 🙂
2.Is “family meeting including canadian relatives”
a convenient excuse ?
3. I need more Madness in my (music-)life …

MDH,
Mind? I love the music and coupled with the video it’s amazing!

Madness, one of my absolute favorite groups!
This song is actually the first classical music most swedish kids hear in life, Either this one or Peter and the Wolf 🙂
Madness does it really good!

I am with you, I am a huge fan of Madness. From the earlier period I loved “The Rise and Fall” and their recent disc “The Liberty of Norton Folgate” might be their best work ever.

Hi Kat,
Some of my animals have been counter surfers. Mostly the cats. The dogs were usually too small to reach unless there was a chair nearby.
Duke, the dog who was not a boxer, was good at filching things. Once he licked all the frosting off my father’s birthday cake.
Liam, the cat, did not counter surf but he was excellent at the stealth claw hook. He snagged a slice of roast beef off the platter as my mother was standing there carving it. She said that all she saw was black and white paw come up from under the edge of the table, snag the meat and disappear. I think she said she went under the table after it and told the cat just for that he wasn’t getting any.
Sorry about England, guys.
Thunderstorms all around me at the moment.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
I did have a couple of cats who roamed the counter but with them I think it was curiosity-they never seemed interested in the food.
That is so funny about the cake’s icing.
Liam sounds like a darn ingenious cat!
Rain here too this afternoon but no thunder, darn!

We have weather from hell today! 52F as warmest, winds at gale force and so much rain I’m beginning to suspect that my cottage soon will sink down and disappear in the ground. We’ll get at least two inches more until tomorrow morning and that’s nothing compared to what we already have gotten. I’m a bit tired of this now.
Nova is a counter surfer but since she’s rather small she doesn’t reach that good. It was a totally different thing with old Viran! She was big and reached everywhere. Unfortunately she also was very smart. She stole not only my food, she also stole my neighbors dinners quite often 🙂 🙂 🙂 I don’t know why they let her in when she was taking her walkabout’s 🙂
She also destroyed three refrigerators trying to get the food inside. Trying is wrong because she always got it :-), and new that if she used a chair she easily could reach things on top of the kitchen cabinets where I had all dry goods since I didn’t have a pantry back then. She also managed to open the cabinets when I tried to hide it in there 🙂 🙂 🙂
I had locks on the doors to the trash but she she still managed to get the trash every now and again. She never tried to hide it though, she happily spread the trash all over my home. I think there was something wrong in her head but she was the funniest dog I’ve ever had and she was never boring 🙂 🙂 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
I don’t blame you for feeling as if you’re in hell. I think it’s the winds which makes it seem as if you’re doomed. We finally for some rain today, enough to make the plants happy!
Old Viran stealing the neighbor’s food gave me a laugh. They must have thought it funny when she’d drop by for a bite though destroying the refrigerator would have made her unwelcome in some houses! She was darn smart to know that the fridge held food. You reminded me that Shauna, the surfer, also could open cabinets, especially the one which held the basket. She push the basket to the side to get at the food in the cabinet beside it which she couldn’t open. Shauna would eat all her treats!
I don’t think there was anything wrong-she was just being a dog. Each of them has such a unique personality.

Not sure if it’s in the breed but this is the first time in my life, even before getting married, that we have two cats who stay off the counters. I swear you could leave a salmon there fully exposed and they wouldn’t be interested. I find that curious for cats. Every cat I even had was on the countertop and one Siamese would jump up on the dinner table and hook meat off our forks. Nothing was safe. I think Gracie finds things taste better when they’re stolen.
June 25, 2012 at 5:11 pm
Z&Me,
I think it is the cat who chooses the counter. One of my Siamese was a surfer while my other Siamese, the male, could care less. That funny, wonderful cat was the first and only counter surfer I had.
Gracie is darn smart and I never catch her thieving, and I’m home when she does it.

Great photo!
Did you know, that one of the most moving dog songs is by Iggy Pop?
Don’t be afraid, it’s not punk-Iggy with “I wanna be your dog”,
but wise old pop-Iggy 😉
June 25, 2012 at 5:23 pm
Birgit,
I wish this song were true and during the night my dog will return as a puppy and jump on my bed.
The only problem with a dog is its short life.
They love us so much and so unconditionally, and I feel such huge loss when it is time for one of my dogs to take its last breath.
Great sad song!

My recently departed 85 lbs. Greyhound stood tall enough to counter surf but he never attempted to grab food but only licked the surface during his old age. Are current Daschund is too short to surf anywhere except the floor.
Today the temperature reached 103 here in Dallas and 104 in Ft. Worth. It’s not hot enough to fry eggs on the sidewalk, but I have only ventured out to walk to my car before driving home. I think there was a song when I was a kid whose lyrics were something about only mad dogs and Englishman would go out in the noon day sun. Even they wouldn’t leave the AC for the outside at four in the afternoon in North Texas.
June 25, 2012 at 9:46 pm
Bob,
My friends have a Westie who is also too short to counter surf. I figure like the Westie your Daschund is probably quick on anything that falls to the floor.
I also knew about the mad dogs and Englishmen, and I doubt they’d chose to love in North Texas. I would become a mole, staying inside all the time where the AC would be cranking out the cold air!

Knew someone years ago who came home from Midnight Mass to find half of their thawing turkey on the floor, the rest in the stomach of their counter surfing mutt. Also, My ex, when he lived on Plum Island, had a dog who would steaks off barbecues. That’s what I call a smart dog.
I liked the Madness video too.
June 26, 2012 at 9:45 am
Cuidado,
That is a really smart dog especially in choosing steak! I suspect Duke and the turkey eating dog might be a bit related as I could see him doing the same thing!
