I agree about the hokeyness of this movie, but it is beautiful especially in this song. Also, I took some students to see this in Ghana. I was a chaperone for 5 students on the ride to Kumasi to watch the investiture of the African bishop in March of 1970. We watched it on an outside screen. At the end, as a treat, I took them to the movies and bought each of them popcorn. We watched The Sound of Music. My students had questions all the way through, but they loved the music. This song carries a whole lot of memories.

I don’t know how many times I have seen this movie, but it is enough so I know every word to this song.

The original title of this song was When De Saints Go Marchin’ In. I guess it got prettified. De makes perfect sense to me. The Ghanaians always said De so it was dem and dose instead of them and those. The reason is simple. They have no TH sound in their own languages so they don’t know how to form it with the tongue and teeth.

Okay, this is a bit of a stretch. I didn’t find another cookie song I wanted to post, but I found The Cookies who later became The Raelettes.
