Year of the Cat: Al Stewart
September 18, 2010House Cat: The Romancers
September 18, 2010This came off an album called Dootone Doo Wop Vol 2.
The Cat in the Window (The Bird in the Sky): Petula Clark
September 18, 2010This song was released in 1967 but was a chart disappointment as it reached no higher than 26, her least successful US release up to that date.
Diamonds and Rust: Joan Baez and Judy Collins
September 17, 2010This is from Paradise, Judy's most recent album. It was released last June.
It boggles my mind that Judy is 71. Her voice is still so amazing and has lost none of its beauty. I think this duet is like a musical dream come true. The two singers fit so perfectly together.
Albatross: Rufus Wainwright
September 17, 2010This song is compliments of my good friend Pete. He sent me Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins. The songs are all hers, the ones she wrote, and the album is wonderful. The different singers lend their own interpretation to Judy' songs. Some of the songs sound almost bare, bereft as they are of that amazing soprano, but I loved their them for their newness. This is a favorite.
Luka: Suzanne Vega
September 16, 2010The other day I heard an interview with Suzanne on NPR, and it made me realize how seldom I play her music. I'm rectifying that today.
This song originally appeared on her second album, Solitude Standing, released in 1987. The song of hers I first heard, Tom' Diner, is also on this album.
This particular cut comes from Retrospective: The Best of Suzanne Vega released in 2003.
Many a Mile: Buffy Sainte-Marie
September 16, 2010I first heard this Patrick Sky song on his self-titled debut album released in 1965. I know I played it a time or two on the blog once known as Coffee.
This cover is from Many a Mile, Buffy's second album, the one with Until It's Time for You to Go. Unless something has recently changed, it was never reissued here on CD.
Matchbox full of Diamonds: David Kramer
September 14, 2010This is one of those orphans I find in my files, a one of a kind. I looked up David Kramer, "He began his music career in the mid 1970's, singing at folk clubs and campus concerts in South Africa. David pioneered the use of Cape Afrikaans and South African English in his lyrics, often using both languages in the same song. He focused on small town South Africa and employed a gritty realism and dark satire to tell his stories and describe his characters."
This is from Klassic Kramer, a compilation released in 1996.
Get Out and Dance: Tim O’Brien
September 14, 2010I figured perky was perfect for today. This is from Chameleon, released in 2008.
Down From Sacramento: Terence Martin
September 13, 2010This is from his most recent album, The Last Black And White TV. It was released in June.
