Once, in Ghana, I was visiting friends and using their shack out back when I heard a noise below me. I stood up, looked down and a head appeared just below the sitting hole. It was the night soil man whose job it was to empty the outhouse buckets. He looked up, said, “Hello, madame,” and then went about his business. After he’d finished, I sat back down and went about mine.
