“Hope Smiles from the threshold of the year to come, Whispering ‘it will be happier’…”

I apologize for the lateness of Coffee. I had company this morning and didn’t want to let them go as they are the first company since March. They had had negative tests so we didn’t need masks but we kept the distance. Henry even let them pat him, but that took a while. Poor Henry doesn’t see enough people to be socialized which is sad because he does like people and the treats they offer. Henry likes my cleaning couple because he sees them twice a month, and he even let Lee hold his paw while I cut his nails.

Today is cloudy and a bit warmer than I expected, but it will get cold tonight, down to 35˚. The clouds will hang around because showers are predicted starting around midnight and continuing into tomorrow, but I’m just fine with that. The high will be 53˚. That sounds almost balmy.

I have to believe this new year can’t be worse than last year. I’m not sure anything can be.

When I was a kid, New Year’s Day meant school the next day, and it meant putting away our new clothes and toys. The living room looked empty, but when the tree, next to come down, was outside, the living room looked deserted. I hated New Year’s Day.

Last night I stayed awake and watched the worst year in history disappear in a countdown. The ball dropped. The new year started, and I went to bed.

    Hi Kat,

Happy 2021! We all stayed up to watch the ball drop on the sparse crowd in Times Square. I have to disagree with you that 2020 was the worst year in history. I think it’s the worst year in our lifetimes. I think the WWII years or the Great Depression of the 1930s were worse. My son cooked up a batch of black eyed peas yesterday which in the south is considered good luck to eat on New Years Day. We’re not taking any chances.

They cancelled the Rose Parade so I slept late this morning. I can’t believe that they moved the Rose Bowl game to AT&T Stadium here in Arlington where the Covid laws are more lax than in Democratic California. Now, more folks can watch Alabama and Florida play in person while they spread around the disease. We’re a Republican State where personal freedom and football is king.

The last hurdle in getting rid of Trump will be next week when Congress officially awards the electoral college votes to Biden. Of course there’s an East Texas congressman who has filed a law suit to get Pence to reject the Democratic electors and replace them with Trump’s electors. It’s a last ditch attempt to overturn the legitimate election. I think all these Republicans in Congress are doing this because they will have to face their voters and they want to be able to say that they tried to prevent the Democrats from stealing the election from Trump. After all, democracy be damned.

The rain finally stopped and the sky is cloudy with a damp, cold wind blowing. It feels colder and more miserable than the 49° outside temperature.

      Hi Bob,
The difference I see in the other years was we were free to move around without worrying we’d get Covid, and we were not afraid that any unmasked stranger could be the harbinger of death. The Depression was horrific and did last longer than a single year, but during that Great Depression, mortality rates fell, though suicide rates rose.

I also slept in and missed the parade, always a New Year’s treat. I will not be watching any football games. I’ll watch movies, maybe disaster movies. I live in quite the blue state and masks are mandatory. Nothing lax here.

I figure the Republicans haven’t stopped to realize that if it was a fraudulent election in the swing states, all of the election must be rerun, including seats won by Republicans. That man is an idiot if he thinks Pence will just announce Trump the winner. They likened that to a presenter at the Oscars who announces his favorite movie, not the one voted on by the Academy. It can’t happen, the votes are already certified.
