“Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.”
Yesterday was day three of me getting out of the house. Gracie had her annual physical and all is well. Her heart sounded good and she has maintained her weight. Her nails were trimmed but she didn’t get nail polish. Just joking of course as boxers are not the nail polish type. Today and tomorrow I’ll be out yet again. This has become a trend. I think the sunshine of yesterday and today have helped invigorate me a bit.
Snow and sleet are coming tonight, only an inch or two, but 41˚is coming tomorrow for just one day. I can’t imagine 41˚. I have come to think of 37˚ as balmy. Last night was so cold everything froze again. It was a tentative walk this morning to get the papers and yesterday’s mail as my street is covered with a block of ice. Above freezing weather doesn’t help much because of the thickness of the ice. Only the surface melts leaving another layer to freeze at night. I have thrown de-icer on my brick walk and that has given me a safe route to the car.
This morning Fern was lying on the couch in the sunshine coming in from the front door. It wasn’t much, but Fern took full advantage. My cats crave the warmth of the sun, and I totally understand.
Flower catalogues are coming every day. I look through them just to marvel at the colors. I do have room in my front garden for more flowers as two bushes were moved last fall. I am excited about shopping for new plants. That feels like spring to me.
It was two nights ago I was cursing the falling snow, the long winter and the cold, the endless cold. I had reached the end of my endurance. Today the sun is bright and I am energized.

Hi Kat,
We didn’t get much snow out of the last storm. An inch maybe, and it melted away leaving just the 8 feet that we already had. I have a spot on the front walk that has melted down to pavement but everything around it is still inches of compressed and frozen snow. The snow melts and collects in a watery puddle on that pavement and it freezes overnight. I’m going through a lot of Safety Paws for that one spot.
I bought some seed packets at Walgreens the other day. I have no idea why because I am a poor gardener. I just needed the hope, I guess. 🙂 Probably I will end up tossing them in the empty space by the back door where only the strongest will survive.
The dogs and I have been out a couple of times this morning. The sun was warm in the sheltered places even though the temps are low. The sun is fading away behind overcast skies now and the dogs and I are loafing around on the couch.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
We didn’t get much either, just enough to cover the walks and the icy streets. There is a spot of pavement on my street and parts of my walk are down to brick, but I just broke several pieces of ice with my foot as I was walking from the driveway. Everything is melting. I use a different de-icer as they were out of Safety Paws but it too is safe for pets and they added children.
The sky here is also becoming overcast. I just got back from PT. Gracie is out in the yard. She enjoys being outside longer on these warmer days.
Have a great afternoon!

Kat,
Our forecasted 2″ – 6″ over night turned out to be 1/4″ or even less and the wind quit sometime in the very early morning. The quiet woke me up, but, with very little effort, I managed to ignore it and get back to snoozing. The bright sunny skies this morning was very welcoming.
I usually go to the picture you post and then to the music (not on your site but the emails that arrive. And from those two, I guess your topic. With a fair amount of accuracy. Today, however, points scored were zero. The mud definitely bumped me off the track. Good one!!

Sorry, Carl, I didn’t mean to lead you astray. It was the picture and the melting and a tiny spot of mud near my car.
We won’t get much snow as it will get sleety then turn to all rain. The sky already has a rain look about it and it feels raw outside.
I hope you get back on a winning track!

Today we warmed up to the low 50s with low clouds fog and mist. The forecast for tomorrow is that the rain will change to sleet or snow as another cold front races south from Canada. I will gladly put up with the heat of summer rather than the ice or snow. I can’t wait for spring to bring the April showers and the May thunderstorms. This winter weather has been miserable and looking forward to spring living in tornado alley is absurd. At least when there’s a thunderstorm the snow occurs between above about 20,000 ft. At least when it hits the ground the worst thing is hail. What am I saying, hail is better than snow? Bring on the heat of July and August. 🙂

Bob,
I prefer the cold to the heat. I figure it is easier to get warm than it is to find a way to get cool without air-conditioning.
The last thing I want is the heat of August, a day with the sun beating down on the world with no reprieve.
You only have a small taste of what winters general are like here every year. I did get a chuckle from your describing the winter as miserable. Come look out the window at a world still covered in snow. We’re dancing in the streets as it is 39˚.
It will snow again tomorrow.

Hey Kat,
Here in Southern Missouri we’re under a winter storm warning. Rain now…sleet starting tomorrow am…temp further dropping turning everything to snow in the afternoon. We will be going from 40 degrees now to 6 degrees in 13 hours. A couple inches of sleet and 6 inches of snow on top of that. All of Feb we sat around the single digets…then snow and ice and melting and refreezing….and…..well you know the drill. Our power has stayed on—thank goodness.
The wkend starts the true thaw. Temps in the 50s! The horses are so ready for abit of Spring pasture. The GS pup is so ready for running in all the mud. And the Corgis are so ready to chase that possum up the trees. I’m ready for all of them to amuse themselves for abit and let me sit and absorb some of that calm quiet warm spring sun.

t,
I know that temperature drop. It’s like having all the breath in your body whooshed away when the cold reaching your lungs. It has been so cold this winter that we dance in the streets when the temperature reaches 35˚.
I wish we’d have that true thaw. Even with today’s rain, there is still so much snow left on the ground and more is predicted for tomorrow. I dread it getting cold tonight as there are actual puddles on my walkway and they will become ice by morning.
I closed my eyes and envisioned a pasture, the horses and the pup. The corgis need a bit of luck!
Enjoy the coming weekend!
