Spaceman,
We don’t call them Moon Pies but we have something similar, and anything with chocolate is a gift. I never knew about salted peanuts and coke.
Spaceman,
His review was filled with superlatives. After I watched this one, I watched another by someone else. He too used superlatives. Both said it tasted fantastic and Reed said magical, but I’m still a bit leery of giving it a try.
I’d totally forgotten about Coke and salted peanuts. I’m pretty sure it was a Southern thing — maybe still IS a Southern thing, but I haven’t seen anyone do this for decades. Those superlatives are warranted. Back in the day (50s and 60s), you could get a Coke for a dime or less and a bag of peanuts for 5 cents. for 15 cents you had yourself a treat and a half on a summer afternoon. I don’t know for sure, but I think this “trick” probably works best in those old glass bottles. What does it taste like? Coke and peanuts, of course. Only magnified. And it only works with Coca-Cola (which is about 3/4 acid anyway). Do yourself a favor and try it. I know I’m going to. I have the peanuts. Now all I need is to get a bottle of Coke. (Burrrrrrrrrp!)
im6,
I hadn’t ever heard of it. All the videos I saw were done by Southerners. They were insistent that no can be used, only a bottle. Each of them loved the taste of the peanuts infused with the coke. Now I’m going to have to give it a try, but first I need to buy the Coke and the peanuts!
From the linked web page:
Why put the peanuts in the bottle?
“I think putting peanuts in Coke may go back to working people who may not have had a place to wash up,” Masters says. “If you’ve been working on a car and have grease all over your hands, you pour the peanuts directly in the bottle and they stay clean.”
Edge says that combining the two made it easier to drive a stick shift on the back roads of Central Georgia, while James Brown thinks that the tradition may have begun in order to leave one hand free to smoke or to keep working.”
As I’m writing this, I’m having peanuts in a glass of Pepsi. I do not recommend this. The Pepsi is too sweet and there’s some chemical reaction missing that I guess only a bottle can create. I’m also not hot and sweaty. So many variables! Have never heard of METV, but those old movies sound like the ones that go best with Walnettos. Did you ever have those at the movies when you were a kid? They disappeared for years, but you can buy them again online. I heartily recommend them, but you can only seem to buy them in large quantities. Here’s some info: http://www.walnettosinc.com/about.html
im6,
Sure, after you tell me no Diet Coke there you go and use Pepsi, despite the warning not to use it.
I haven’t had a Walnetto in years. They were never in the candy counter at the movie theater, and I don’t remember where I bought them. They are easy to find on the net. I just Googled and found : http://www.oldtimecandy.com/walnettos.htm
A two pound bag is only $15.00.
As for METV:
San Antonio – GVTC 81
San Antonio – KSAT (Over the air) 12.2
San Antonio – Time Warner 1240
San Antonio – Grande
I’ve bought Walnettos online before and used them for stocking stuffers. Got them at the store you linked, but two pounds is a LOT of Walnettos! Finally found that station on cable, but those old shows are so fuzzy they’re a little hard to watch. Guess I’ll stick to what I have backed up on my DVR…. currently in the middle of HBO’s recent bio of Ann Richards. How I miss her and Molly Ivins.
im6,
The shows aren’t fuzzy on my METV or at least the movies aren’t. I watch old ones on there and enjoy some of the programs from my childhood.
I also miss Ann Richards.
I just heard a noise coming from outside the house. It sounded like it was on the chimney or the roof. I opened the front door and put on the light but saw nothing then I took my flashlight out and checked the roof and side of the house, nothing. The animals were on alert so something must have been there but my foray outside saved the day.
I am now going upstairs to read a while.
Have a wonderful rest of the evening!
Hard to find glass bottle Cokes these days. As a kid, it was a small contest when having Cokes with your buddies to see who had the bottle from the farthest away.
Do have two “Bear Bryant” commemorative Cokes on the shelf (oh hell yes, Roll Tide).
Spaceman,
I have a Coke bottled in Boston which is on the shelf next to my A&W mug and not far from my Howard Johnson’s small dish.
I know a few years ago there were bottles of Coke so there might just be some around. The video showed him using plastic so I’m guessing it works just as well.

Can’t beat that combo! Or pour salted peanuts in your bottle of coke.

Moon Pie/RC also reviewed by Reed

Spaceman,
I watched his review and laughed at his they go together like a black guy and a white girl. He gave the combo a 10.
I think this is a Southern combo as we don’t have Moon Pies as such.
May 3, 2014 at 7:54 pm
Oh, for sure Southern. And I swear, a moon pie does go better with an RC than Pepsi or Coke.
So what do ya’ll have that someone from outside the area would think was unusual.

Spaceman,
Nothing came to mind so I called my sister who also came up empty. There must be something but I’ll have to give this more thought.

im6,
You’re right-that’s what I have in the fridge, cans and cans of it.
I’m willing to give this a try though it doesn’t really tempt my taste buds.
1953’s It Came From Outer Space is on METV. I love theses old movies!
