“Once the rain starts falling it’s hard to tell it to stop…”
This morning you needed a mirror to see if I was still breathing as I slept in until quite late. I must have needed it. When I woke up, I had the edge of the bed while Gracie had the rest of it. She seemed comfortable.
The yard lights didn’t go out last night. They are on a sensor keyed to Gracie and are supposed to turn off after 15 minutes. The heavy rain must have done something. The Christmas lights worked just fine but the yard was lit up all night long. I hoped the light of day would cause them to go out: I was right. It did. I hate having to call an electrician or a plumber.
The churches here still have Christmas fairs. I try to go to a couple every year. I love the white elephant tables as I usually find some kitchen item I can’t imagine I did without. The knitted mittens, slippers and scarfs are for stocking stuffers. Every table is manned by an old lady, which means older than I old lady. They sit behind the tables and chat and call you dear when you buy something. I always end up with an assortment of bags with lots of handmade stuff including jams and jellies and crocheted snowflakes. The old ladies always look the same and most wear an apron. I always wonder if they have old lady substitutes on deck waiting their turn at the tables. If this were a Twilight Zone episode, the ladies would all be robots, and at the end, Rod Serling would come out with some bit of wisdom.
It’s another one of those dreary, dark days. It poured last night and rain is expected today and the next few days. My sister in Colorado has snow and single digit temperatures. She played the glad game I mentioned yesterday and said how lovely the Christmas lights look in the snow. She can have the lovely lights and the snow. I’ll take wet and dreary.
Gracie dug the best hole in my vegetable garden this morning. The fence is down so she wandered in with a preserved body part in her mouth, a beef intestine I think, hard to know. She dug the hole then put her goody in the ground. She used her nose to move the dirt over it. She’ll go out later, dig it up and bring it inside. It was be disgusting looking.

I haven’t moved from the house since I arrived yesterday afternoon. The whole place is iced up and getting in and out of the neighborhood is treacherous. The main roads are passable because cars have worn through the ice but later today or tonight they are predicting light freezing rain or drizzle. Lookout, here comes the dreaded black ice the streets will become a skating rink.
Church fairs and pot luck suppers are the main events for little old ladies. Woman of our mother’s generation wore aprons a lot because they prepared meals and did housework in high heels and dresses 😉 At least according to the reruns of ‘Leave It to Beaver’.
Old is always ten years older than you are now. To me an old man is a man over 76. Of course I am only 66 and a very young man at heart. Better diets and better health care have extended our lives so that we will all run out of our retirement savings before we run out of years. When I was a kid my uncles seemed very old and decrepit when they were in their sixties. They were old and decrepit because they all smoked like chimneys and ate huge quantities of animal fats. Every morning I look in the mirror and ask myself, who is that dapper older guy?

Bob,
Black ice is the scariest of all. You go along at a safe speed, hit a patch then hope to stop without crashing. Luckily we are too warm for all that rain to turn to ice.
My mother and most mothers I knew never wore high heels or dresses working around the house. That was pure TV hype. Aprons are still worn by some of my friends. I just wear grubby clothes when I cook as I am bound to get messy mostly by wiping my hands on my pants.
Two of the ladies on my library board are 90 and one is 86, and they all look great. I should look so good now!

My church in Gothenburg also have Christmas fairs and I love it 🙂 But one is mostly young people behind the tables and they would never call anyone dear 🙂 I haven’t been there for several years though since it’s in the evening and I have four dogs I can’t bring with me.
12,2F here now and the wind has finally calmed down. Sven was truly nasty and brought lots of snow to this area. I’m so tired of snow alreadsy and we haven’t had it more than two days 🙂 I don’t know how bad it was down in Europe though but I guess it was even more nasty there.
I slept for almost twelve hours last night and I really needed it, it feels like I might have the flu but all those aching parts of my body might be the result of shoveling snow several times, I rarely have to do that but the wind forced me this time. It didn’t help that the plow guy made huge walls every time he passed and he passed every time I was finnished 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
The fairs here are all on Saturdays so you have to plan your route accordingly. I seldom see young people manning the tables. I wonder where they keep getting the old ladies!
We are fine. I’d even take the rain every day if it stayed this warm. My sister is freezing in Colorado. I do not want a white Christmas!
I slept for just about the same amount. I haven’t felt great in a few days so I definitely needed it. I’m even thinking of a nap as I’m still feeling ill. I had a flu shot so I’m hoping it isn’t that though I can’t imagine what it could be.
I have Skip who shovels and ploughs for me. I sued to do it myself when I was young but now it is far easier to write out a check.
Have a great evening!

Bargain of the day. The Nilsson RCA Box set is on sale at amazon.co.uk. With the VAT and shipping adjustment it ships to the USA for 33 pounds or $55.
It’s fantastic, don’t miss it at this price (you too in Bochum !)

Can you buy anything on Amazon UK if you have a US IP address? I tried to download a free song from Jazz FM91 website, Toronto’s Jazz station, and I was unable to download the file because I was in the US with a US IP address.

Yes, although I have not attempted downloads. Items that carry VAT are adjusted at source and then shipping is added. It can be very effective for CDs and, if you have an all region DVD player for that product.
There is a fun arbitrage game to be played between the amazon stores in the USA and UK. Make sure you have a credit card that does not assess a foreign currency transaction charge. Capital One or Chase are good.

Hedley, 17 CDs ?!?!? Nope. Too much.

Hi Kat,
The old ladies at the church fairs I’ve been to never wear aprons. They usually wear pull-on polyester pants with the front creases sewn in and sweatshirts with appropriately themed decorations on them. Or those nylon wind suits that old people always wear on tour busses. They do chat and call you dear, though.
I had a fascinating conversation with an old guy at the lake yesterday. He was scavenging bottles and cans from the trash bins and I was in my jeep reviewing my photos. I do this by bracing the camera on top of the steering wheel while I scroll through. It looks like I’m taking pictures through the windscreen.
The man smiled and mugged a bit for the camera and then came over to my window. I rolled it down and we had a lovely conversation about photography. He had been a professional wedding photographer starting back in the 40’s. He knew all the old photographers in town that were my mentors way back when I was learning.
There was a dusting of snow on the lawn this morning around 3AM. It hung around most of the morning but is gone now.
There were a few deer on the lawn this morning at 4AM. Rocky growled and barked a lot so they didn’t hang around very long at all. One of them was a very big deer indeed.
Enjoy the rest of the day.

Hi Caryn,
I forgot all about those sweatshirts. They are so ugly I can’t imagine not remembering them. Nylon suits aren’t big down here but the polyester pants are.
I love meeting people with whom I have wonderful conversations. Usually they are older people willing to chat. Someone with a memory which crosses yours is even more fun.
No snow for us-just tons and tons of rain. It took all day to dry as it was so damp. The sun came out late in the day in time for a pretty sunset.
Have a great evening!

May I try to lighten your dark and dreary day with some Christmas music?

Our concert today was nice and fortunately successful, although a soccer game was at the same time and the usual soccer traffic jams blocked the city. The video is from our concert last week.

Birgit,
You did brighten my day, even the dresses sparkled. O Come, Emmanuel is just about my favorite Christmas song.
I’d always pick a concert over a soccer game.

HeyKat!
I have FINALLY gotten Feedly in a form that I can see your blog again. I was depressed when Google Reader died. But now I have an early Christmas present (Amazon Kindle Fire 8.9″ HD). Typed in the URL and Feedly fired right up. Cool.
I’d occasionally seen bits and pieces of posts on fb, but not on a regular or intact basis.
Hope to be able to comment with sage advice, parsley correct, and on thyme!

Hi Rick,
What are you doing with Christmas presents this early?
I’m glad you get to read Coffee now. I know how disappointed you were when Google Reader died.
Your last line has me groaning……….
December 7, 2013 at 9:56 pm
It was a present that was just designated a Christmas present.
Glad you enjoyed my pun.

Okay, then, I won’t tell Santa on you.
Loved the pun!
