From the really excellent “In the studio”. Jerry Dammers had pretty much wound up The Specials and produced an incarnation called The Special A.K.A, On the album and while Mandela was still incarcerated, came “Free Nelson Mandela”.
In an era of fluffy big hair bands, Dammers produced direct politically charged songs which including not only this song but “Ghost Town”
This is the definitive version but heck even Amy Winehouse was still belting it out at Nelson’s 90th Birthday and here she is
I didn’t really relate to Winehouse and chums who turned it in to a bit of a singalong.
Dammers version brought international attention to Mandela’s plight. Peter Gabriel’s “Biko” and Stephen Van Zandt’s “Sun City” we’re equally important.

My Dear Hedley,
I was totally drawn to her hair-do. It mesmerized me. I heard her singing but off in the distance.

MDH,
Sometimes it gives me a chuckle.

MDH,
As I said, her singing didn’t hold my attention as much as that huge mound on her head.
I did a bit of musical searching and found quite a few songs about Mandela. Musicians rallied to his cause.
