“Everywhere water is a thing of beauty gleaming in the dewdrop, singing in the summer rain.”
The rain is steady but gentle so I can still hear the single drops as they fall on the leaves by the deck. Every now and then a bird calls. The house is dark, the sort of dark which feels safe and lends itself to contemplation. I have no plans for the day except maybe doing a wash. The laundry bag of clothes has been sitting and waiting for two days by the cellar door.
Gracie sits by the back door and watches the rain. Soon enough it will be her morning nap time. What a lovely way to fall asleep: gently lulled by the drops of rain. She’ll sleep in her crate. She loves it on days like today.
I am in a reading mood today. I see myself lying on the couch, quite comfy and cozy. I don’t have a book to read, but I figure I can download something. When I was young, I used to lie in bed with the headboard light on and read all afternoon when it rained. Even then I’d leave the windows opened so I could hear the rain fall. In a house filled with people, I always felt as if I were alone, as if I were the only person in the house. It was always the most peaceful time I can remember.
I loved riding my bike through puddles. I think it was a bit like Moses parting the Red Sea. On each side of me a giant wave was whooshed into the air by my tires as I rode through. My sneakers and the bottoms of my jeans always got soaked, but I never cared. Puddles were far too much fun for such small considerations as wet shoes and pants.
Rain in Ghana never stopped the world. Everyone was always out and about their business as if the day were sunny. I did the same thing. Before I left, I was given a fold-up umbrella as a gift. My first week there, when I had used it in the rain, I left it in a room, and it was gone when I went back a short while later. That didn’t really matter. After that, I just walked in the rain the same as everyone else.

Oh, oh, oh….to go with your rain theme, “The Art Of Racing In The Rain” by Garth Stein. An absolutely wonderful book…definitely in my Top 5 of all time!

Mixed weather over here today. Mostly its just cloudy but every now and again the sun shines or the rain falls. IΒ΄ve been out working in my garden during the time the sun doesnΒ΄t shine because when it does its like walking in a steam bath out there π
IΒ΄m rereading “A short history of nearly everything” and its just as funs and interesting this time too. Today is my last vacation day for this summer. It passed way to fast.
I loved going trough puddles with my bike too π I tried to lift my feet as high as possible but like You I always got wet anyway π Rainy days were perfect for fishing as well. I loved to sit under a bridge doing nothing but hoping for a fish to take that bait π They seldom did π
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
It rained all day, heavily at times. Gracie went out her door, turned around and came right back inside the house with her ears plastered to her head even though she was barely out long enough to get wet.
Vacations have a tendency to go fast while the work week crawls.
I always though fish bit better when it rained. I’ll have to ask my nephew who fishes all the time with my brother, a fly fishing guide.

Thanks for the wonderful description of rain. It has been so long since I saw any here in North Texas I had forgotten what the sound, sight and even smell of the rain was like.

Bob,
I thought of you when I wrote this knowing how awful it has been for you and the state.
It will rain again and you’ll dance under the drops!

Ahh but that was a message that in Ghana they don’t use umbrellas so your’s was sold to some Congressman in DC who would never go out in the rain without cover, usually carried by an aide. hehehe. That was the life I witnessed living there. My wife’s been doing laundry all weekend while I’ve napped and made a few calls. It was a weekend set aside for the first Hurricane of the season which crapped out, thank God, over Haiti.

Z&Me,
I did get that laundry done so I felt accomplished. I even fell asleep, not intending to take a nap, but it was for only 30 minutes or so.
The rain just stopped, finally, and Gracie was out running around having been stuck in all day. It’s a bit humid and a quiet night.

Hi Kat,
Yes I, too, rode my bike through the puddles trying to make as big a V wave as possible. I don’t remember my mother being upset that I had wet sneakers. They were Keds, after all, so there wasn’t much structure to them and they dried out pretty fast.
The kids next door were playing in the puddle in front of my house last night while my neighbor and I chatted and the dogs wrestled. The kids were using Razors and Waveboards instead of bikes. Their mother was warning them not to get their sneakers wet. Kind of hard to do on something that is so close to the ground. π
My day was quiet. I worked on a lace shawl instead of the laundry that I should have been doing. Oh, well.

Hi Caryn,
You’re right-I don’t remember my mother getting upset either. Keds did dry fast on your feet.
I did my laundry and feel quite accomplished. It had been sitting there for two days. I think I might even venture to the grocery store today. I am out of so many things.
It was raining too hard all day for outside play so no kids at puddles.
