My mother had cousins in Buffalo N.Y. One of these cousins contacted me to fill in his family tree. I asked him how his father, my grandfather’s brother settled in Buffalo. My grandfather and his brother immigrated from the Ukraine in 1905. They both served in the Russian army during the Russo-Japanese war in 1905. My grandfather’s brother hated NYC, and when he saved a little money he went to Grand Central Terminal. He gave the ticket seller his money and said, “How far can I go with this much money?” The ticket seller said, “Buffalo”. And that why my second cousins were born in Buffalo.

That’s a great story. Wow, your family being here goes way back and from Ukraine of all places!

Did you lose track of that part of the family?

My mother’s family came from a town near Odessa. My father’s family came from Rush-Poland. My paternal grandfather also immigrated here in 1905.

That is really interesting. I have knowledge of only the arrival of one set of great-grandparents. on my mother’s side of the family. They were Portuguese and came from Cape Verde. My grandfather’s father was murdered, beaten to death, over someone’s else’d debt, not his. That wasn’t long after he arrived from Ireland.
