“One thing I love about Christmas music is that it has a tradition of warmth.”

Today will be rainy. The morning is getting darker. It is in the 50’s, but the air has a chill. The dogs were out and back inside quickly. They then went upstairs to nap. My house is quiet.

Yesterday was a good day. It was a lazy day. My dinner was delicious and the plate was filled. I watched a rerun of the Plymouth parade and looked for my cousins, three of whom march with the Northstars. I found them all. I didn’t have M&M’s, nuts or tangerines, my childhood parade snacks, but I did have crackers and cheese and later, after delivery, shrimp. I did miss the M&M’s.

When I was a kid, Friday was allowance day. I’d get my 50¢ from my mother. If the day was warm enough, I’d ride my bike uptown to the Children’s Corner store and buy a book. The store had a tall bookshelf in the back. It was filled with Whitman books, the sort with hard cardboard covers. I bought my Trixie Belden books there. The books cost 49¢. I’d buy a piece of penny candy with the change. I was rich.

The menu today was always turkey. Usually lunch was turkey sandwiches with all the fixings. Supper was a rerun of Thanksgiving dinner, but I never minded. I loved turkey. We only had it twice a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so turkey meant the holidays to me.

I am a sloth. I had a dream of staying in my cozies, but my dream is dashed. I have to go out to Orleans for PT. I have to get dressed, such a burden.

In the corner of my bedroom is a pile of boxes and packages. They are all Christmas presents. I haven’t any idea how many and to whom as they have been piling for weeks. On my maybe today, maybe not today to do list is organize gifts.

One of my radio stations has started playing Christmas carols. They do it each year. I will not complain. Christmas carols have a short shelf. They are usually played for only a couple of weeks. That is not even time enough given the number of carols, some so obscure they seldom see the light of day. I’m leaving my radio on that station, and I’ll sing along joyfully.

Hi Kat, the clouds are still with us but the rain has temporarily stopped. The temperature might hit 59° before the sun sets.

My allowance day was Saturday. Like you I would ride my bike to the nearby drug store and buy either a couple of comic books or a paperback book and a peice of candy. In those days fifty cents was like a fortune even in a kid’s mind. 🙂

Today we picked up my daughter and had Chinese food for lunch. We ate at another authentic Chinese restaurant, meaning we where a small Caucasian minority among the other authentic patrons.

Depending on the weather, tomorrow or Sunday we will bring my daughter back to Grapevine to see the lights in the historic downtown main street. Grapevine advertises itself as, “The Christmas Capitol of Texas”. At a later time during my holiday break between Christmas and New Years, we might visit the indoor Christmas light overkill, in the atrium of the Gaylord Texan Hotel on lake Grapevine. They also sell tickets for their ice sculpture exhibit which is based this year on the Christmas Express theme. Another nearby Christmas light extravaganza is the headquarters of the Christian broadcasting company, “Daystar” located just a mile or two from our house.

Both my spouse and daughter love seeing the Christmas lights. I can either take them or leave them. “Bah Humbug”, and the season is just beginning. 🙁

    Hi Bob,
We got rain after noontime, but it didn’t stay around too long. It did leave behind an ugly damp day.

My father wanted me to save my allowance for a rainy day. I wanted a book. He used to tell my mother that he was the only ant in a family of grasshoppers (from the tale of the ant and the grasshopper). The ant saved. The grasshopper played.

I tend to eat more at Thai restaurants. My two favorites are run by Thais. In the town where I grew up, the Chinese restaurant was owned and run by Chinese. They used to send a van into Boston’s Chinatown to pick up their waiters. Around here on the cape, there are few Chinese restaurants that don’t serve the regular Americanized Chinese food.

I love Christmas lights. Every year I take a light ride. Usually I bring the dog; this year it will be the dogs. I think my sisters also take light rides. We have a few special places near me. One is an antique train ride where all along the route are decorations. The other is on the grounds of a Christian complex. I’m with your wife and daughter.

    Hi Kat,
I ignored most of T.G, except I had seen a wonderful show about Buffy St. Marie the day before on PBS. I used to go to Thanksgiving dinners, but I don’t any longer. It was a nice day, I connected with some older friends.
I don’t think I ever got an allowance. I worked in the store in the summertime, and in the winter, I had almost every thing I needed, till I was a teen, and I don’t want to even speculate how I got money for what I needed.
Since I don’t celebrate Christmas, I don’t care much about it.
    Have a great day,
    Lori and Cookie

      Hi Lori,
I needed my turkey on the big day. The dinner I had delivered was delicious and filling. There was no room on the plate for anything else. I would have preferred to be with friends, but none were around.

It is good to connect with friends. The friends with whom I used to celebrate moved to Florida. I’m okay, though, with enjoying my meal and movies.

The allowance was little so it didn’t buy much. It was more of trying to teach responsibility. I didn’t know anyone who worked when they were young. Even when we were teens, only one of my friends worked. I got money then from my parents but only when I needed it to go somewhere.
