That’s exactly how I wash my clothes. Every thing feels so hard lately.

Recently, I watched a series on the History Channel about the machines that changed the world. One of those was the washing machine. The program indicated that Mondays where the hardest day of the week for home makers because it was wash day. Think of how hard it must have been to boil water, wash cloths manually using a wash board and then rinse them out. That’s what her expression shows, hard, miserable, back breaking labor.

I would have worn my clothes until they fell off me. In Ghana that is still how most people wash their clothes. It was quite the shock during training; however, some volunteers found women to wash our clothes. I don’t remember how much we paid them. I remember the wringer machine my mother had. I also remember a kid whose arm got caught in the wringer. My mother didn’t have a dryer for a long time.
