Ever hear his “My Old Man”. Recorded live. It breaks my heart every time I hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAxKDLiwrhw
This was one of the great Austin City Limits concnerts…
J,
This touches me in so many ways. We lost my Dad when he was only 66. I so miss him and now my mother who passed away at 76. My dad and I played endless games of cribbage. When I visited, he always made Sunday breakfast. He put me in charge of the toast. I can still see him at the stove cooking my eggs and bacon.
When I beat him at cribbage, it was luck. When he beat me, it was skill!
I love his introductory comments….They help place the contents of the song in his life: “I asked my grandmother why she named him ‘Bayer’…’cause there was no name like that in our family…she said she had her reasons…” gets his laugh…and then he launches into the song.
Goodman was one of the American songwriters that deserve to be long remembered. And John Prine, his good friend, also covered this song…
It was a tragedy when we lost each of these extraordinary songwriters and singers far too soon in their lives. I already miss the music they didn’t get to write.

Thanks, Bob. I looked for original singers and was lucky in my hunt.
