This looks like a “Franklin” stove. Benjamin Franklin was a pretty good inventor and figured out that fireplaces just waste energy and the heat goes up the flue. I have a fireplace with gas logs, which looks pretty, but the heat just goes up the chimney. I haven’t used it and probably won’t. I think a fireplace is a waste, but it’s expected by future buyers, in this priced house. The gas logs came with the house.

Bob,
My friends had a gas fire put into their fireplace. It cost them a pretty penny. I found it too hot at times so I wore a tee shirt under toy long sleeve flannel shirt.
Given the squareness of it, it could be a Franklin stove.

I think the gas connection has been their since the house was built to use as a starter with real logs. The logs in their now are part of the gas burner to make it look like real logs are burning. It’s a virtual log fire that uses lots of natural gas and produces no heat. 🙂

My friends’ gas fire gives out a lot of heat. It keeps their living room almost hot. It is just as you described except for the heat.

Maybe, I should try it out.

Ask a gas company to check it out. It might be worth the cost
