I remember that kind of toaster. I found it in a pile of old junk when I was a teenager. It only toasted one side of the bread at a time and you flipped the slice of bread over when the first side was toasted. It was from before pop up toasters existed.

In Africa I had one even more primitive. It looked like the one in the picture except it wasn’t electrical. You leaned the bread against the side of the charcoal cooker which was hot. You had to turn that slice around as well.
