“Hard to call it a party without sardines.”

The rain is light. It was expected. The temperature is 69˚. The low for the day will be 62˚. I’ve been out and about the last two days so I’m staying home today though I still need to buy flowers and herbs for the garden and the deck boxes. I’m thinking Monday.

Yesterday I swept then washed the kitchen floor, just in time for today’s rain and new Henry paw prints.

Henry keeps chasing poor Jack. He jumps at him and purposely lands right behind Jack all the way down the hall. Poor Jack’s little legs move so fast they’re a blur. Henry is having fun. You can see it in his face. Poor Jack jumps on the table, his sanctuary. I pat Poor Jack, and he always falls asleep purring.

My big chore for today is to put all the lantern glass through the dishwasher. Yesterday I noticed how dusty they are, especially the ones in the dining room. I’m thinking this is a symptom. Seriously, who makes plans to wash lantern glass. How bored must this woman be?

Saltines were a stable of my childhood. I used to crush them into my soup, and I used so many the liquid was always absorbed. My father, my sister and I ate canned sardines on Saltines. I find that disgusting now. I can still see those headless fish crammed into the can and packed with olive oil. How could I have eaten those fish? Saltines slathered with peanut butter were a favorite snack of mine. Sometimes I made a fluffernutter with the crackers when I added marshmallow. Why this cracker conversation you’re probably wondering? I bought a box of Saltines, but I didn’t buy any fish.

    Hi Kat,

For the past 10 I’ve been on a “soft food” diet because I’m having a dental implant. When you mentioned saltines, my mouth watered. I miss crispy anything, pretzel sticks, Ritz crackers my favorite, cookies, deep fried anything. I love pasta, but it’s getting tiresome.

Clear and a high of 95 degrees.

      Hi Bob,
I would hate your diet as much as you do. I also love Ritz. There are always a few sleeves in the cabinet. I don’t cook so much. I just don’t want to bother. I hunt through the fridge to find something easy to make. Today I had home fries for lunch. Tonight I had a cheese and crackers. I want it to end. I want to go to my favorite restaurant and have a few drinks and dinner.

    Hi Kat,
Peanut butter on Saltines made into little sandwiches and wrapped in aluminum foil was the standard snack my mother made for us to take to grammar school every day. The combination had a specific smell and sound that I can still recall whenever the subject of saltines and peanut butter comes up.
Canned sardines are problematical. They’re okay but not something I choose to eat. Every now and then I get a craving for sardines and very thinly sliced onions on bread that has been slathered with mayonnaise. It was a combination that a now deceased friend used to make for us when we went hiking.
It’s not the sardines or even the saltines and peanut butter. It’s the memories.

    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
I used to give my father an expensive tin of sardines in his Christmas stocking. He loved it. I talked to my sister. She said my other sister also used to eat them. What an odd thing to share! Your friend’s concoction sounds delicious.

We never had a school snack, but those Saltines were a favorite snack at just about any time. My father liked milk crackers. They disappeared at some point. He was devastated.

You’re right. It is the memories.

I’ve only had either cheese or cheese and orange marmalade on my saltines, never even thought of trying anything else 🙂 🙂 On the other hand they are delicious without anything on them as well.

Windy, sunny, cloudy, rainy, sunny again and so on all day here but it started with thick fog and almost frost. Thunder comes close but never arrives so it has been hard figuring out when to go on walks or to do anything at all really but I don’t mind, after all it is weekend 🙂

    Have a great day!

    Christer.

      Hi Christer,
I loved them with a bit of cold cuts and cheese. With Saltines, the possibilities are endless. I do find them a bit dry by themselves. When I was a kid, a birthday party game was to chew Saltines, keep them in your mouth and try to whistle.

It is horribly humid today. That will disappear but not until tomorrow. It is just an all around ugly day.
