This was when the game was really rough and dangerous. Leather helmets, no face masks and in the NFL the ball was downed when the runner being tackled had both knees on the ground. Also the goal posts were on the goal line which they occasionally ran into at full speed. 🙁

In those days there wasn’t the danger from bumping helmets into heads. I’m thinking there must have been a lot of scrapes and bruises.

And broken bones. In those days the players were paid so little they had to have off season jobs in steel mills or factories.

I’m sure those poor guys would be drooling in envy if they got a view of the future of football’s yearly salaries.
