“He probably wears the mask to hide his bald head and unsightly features.”

The morning is dark and damp and really cold. I should have layered just to get the papers. I’m about to brew more coffee. Today is a hot drink day.

When I was a kid, I was a cocoa fan. I drank it every morning. My mother would make both cocoa and tea and have them ready when we got downstairs. My brother drank the tea. She used to put the tea bags in a teapot, add the boiling water then put the pot in the middle of the table. She made cocoa cup by cup. She’d use a spoon to pry open the metal top of the cocoa then she’d put a couple of heaping teaspoons into the cup then add water or milk. She always bought Hershey’s cocoa. I remember the top had a slot so the empty tin became a bank. I had cocoa last week, two cups of peppermint cocoa mixed in milk. I was only going to have one cup, but it was so good I had to have a second cup.

Our toast was always made with white bread. That’s all my mother used to  buy. I don’t even think we knew there were other kinds of bread. Now I seldom buy white bread. I don’t have have a favorite but some breads are better suited for certain meals. Scali bread goes with Italian. French bread is perfect for bruschetta. Bagels, croissants and English muffins are for breakfast though they’ll also do for sandwiches. You can’t have hummus without pita bread. I also buy naan and lavash. In my kitchen right now you’ll find a single leftover English muffin, some rye bread, tortillas and naan. I like to use naan for pizzas.

I’m watching The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power. I’ve seen it many times  but not in a while. Zorro has just made his first appearance to wonderfully stirring music. It was Disney’s Zorro which introduced the character to me. I didn’t wondered why no one, especially his father, noticed Zorro sounded like Don Diego and even looked like him below the mask. It was the same with Superman and his curl and Clark and his glasses. I didn’t know the words for it back then, but now I know about suspension of disbelief.

Cold here too but with sunshine and unfortunately later in the day wind. It’ll be much the same tomorrow but without the wind thankfully.

I’ve started to drink more cocoa now days since I can’t drink tea or coffee after 4 pm, at least not if I still want to be able to sleep 🙂 My mother always bought the cocoa one had to put in warm milk and add sugar after taste. Unfortunately she always boiled the milk and rarely warned about it. Now days I mostly buy the ready made one but one still need to add milk (cold or warm) because it can’t be mixed in water if one want it to taste good 🙂

I think that was the reason I never really liked super hero stories, they looked and sounded much the same and no one saw it 🙂 🙂 🙂 I do like the movies they make now days though, I’m so glad I don’t feel logic is important in those films 🙂 🙂

    Have a great day!

      Christer,
No wind here, but it is really cold. As it got dark, it got so much colder. It is supposed to be even colder tomorrow. I’ll be staying home nice and warm.

I drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon once in a while. My cocoa is made with milk as that makes it richer and tastier. I buy a can of cocoa from which you take a tablespoon or two. It doesn’t need sugar. I am sad that I am almost out of the mint chocolate cocoa. It is so good.

No logic is indeed what these movies need. I’m okay with that. The movies are generally entertaining. The TV Superman, starring George Reeves, was a program I never wanted to miss.

      Have a great day!!

    Hi Kat,

My mother would make us hot chocolate on cold mornings but I think she bought Nestle’s Quick. One of the best powered coco is made by Ghiradelli. Of course any food from San Francisco is excellent.

My mother also only bought white bread for toast or sandwiches. Bagels were an unknown thing in Texas in the 1950s and my father would bring back bags of them from New York when he traveled there on business. We did have a couple of Kosher style delicatessens that sold good rye bread and Kaiser Rolls. The first bagel shop opened in Dallas in 1965 when Benny Leibowitz moved here and opened a bagel bakery. I remember the date because I went to college with his daughter. Back then we referred to her as a two bagger. That meant that she was so ugly that she had to wear a paper bag over her head if you had sex with her and you had to wear one over your head in case her bag broke. 🙂 That was in the era of the Frito Bandido and Aunt Jemima TV commercials. I’m sure Mel Brooks couldn’t make “Blazing Saddles” today. We were not at all PC in 1965.

Is that movie you are watching, “The Sign of Zorro” made in 1958? If so that was edited from the eight episodes of the TV series. I don’t think you can make a Zorro movie today without having an uproar from the hispanic community.

This morning the low was 29 and the high is forecasted to reach 40 degrees. The wind chill is bad due to 27 MPH winds gusting to 40 MPH.

      Hi, Bob

We had Nestle’s Quick but we used it only with cold milk. We used to get 1 bottle of chocolate milk with our delivered order. We used to mix it with white to make it last longer. When it was gone, we used Quick.

There were no bagels when I was a kid. My father used to buy donuts on Sunday after mass. We had only Italian delis, no Kosher. I don’t even know if the cape has a Kosher deli. There used to be a few Italian delis but I only know of one. I shop there for cold cuts. They have real mortadella with pistachios.

I never heard of a two bagger. I aways figured Blazing Saddles was a satire about the old West so whether or not it was PC depends on how you view the film. I thought it was meant to be funny. PC didn’t exist in 1965.

No, the Zorro I was watching is The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power made in 1940. The Legend of Zorro was made in 2009. The hero was Hispanic so a movie can be made without being offensive.

It was in the high 20’s, but it has been getting colder. Tomorrow will be really cold, in the teens. I’ve been staying home nice and warm.
