You’re probably thinking I did it again: went off without letting you know but not this time. Somnus and his cohort Morpheus stayed away until about three in the morning. I watched a couple of good films on TCM, did some reading and played on my computer. I slept until 11. Henry woke me up earlier, around 8, so I let him out and went back to bed. He joined me later. He also woke me up jumping on and off the bed and squeaking his toy over and over. He had it in his mouth and was running from my room to the guest room then on to the bed. His gross green toy goes everywhere Henry goes. It still has a squeaker but no insides, no head and only a couple of legs. It is right beside him on the couch.
Today is stunningly beautiful. The sky is deep blue and the sun is bright and hot. When I went to get the papers and then came back inside, it took a little bit for my eyes to adjust after being in the bright sunlight. Here in the den at the back of the house is still chilly. Last night got cold. Right now it is 70˚ and tonight will get down to 60˚. That sounds perfect to me.
I never did get out yesterday except to the deck. I filled all the feeders and hung some new stuff on the shingles. Today I’ll water the plants and I’ll really do errands. Henry needs canned food.
I do love my newspaper, but lately every story is sad or depressing or infuriating. Sometimes I have all three reactions from a single article. The best thing in today’s paper was the comics. They were in color.
When I was a kid, the summer was a wealth of adventures. A time of long lazy days to do everything or nothing. When I was teaching, I went to Europe most summers for 4 or 5 weeks. I was that iconic backpacker carrying my copy of Let’s Go Europe. I slept on trains instead of in hotels; I ate dinner at happy hour while nursing a single drink; I knew the best way to see any new city and where the hostels were. I traveled totally on the cheap.
When I was an administrator, I worked summers but arranged my time so I had most Fridays and Mondays off. My friends and I got together often for drinks or rather for drinking. Now I have all the time in the world and have mostly empty dance cards but I don’t really mind. I’ve come to enjoy lazy days.

Dry, hot and clear is the basic weather forecast in North Texas until August. Then it will be the same except even hotter. 🙂
As a taxpayer I’m aggravated that our public school system shuts down for the summer. It’s a throw back to a simpler time when kids had to be off to tend the fields and air conditioning didn’t exist. Today most agriculture is industrial farms. Our schools come out 14th in a list of 40 county’s education systems. Not as bad as I suspected but we should be number one or two. Here in Texas the air conditioned buildings sit empty from late May through large August and our kids only get educated a messily 180 days a year. What a waste of money and missed opportunities to educate our kids for the jobs of the future instead of the past.

This morning I was reluctant to get out of bed to go to work but I couldn’t imagine staying home all day in retirement. In the last year I can’t count how many retired airline pilots my company has hired both full and part time. Some of them are even older than myself. All of them have returned to work because they were bored and their spouses threatened to divorce them if they didn’t get out of the house. 🙂

We are dry and getting warmer over the next few days. Today was in the low 70’s. It was a great day. Tonight is already cool.
Our kids too get 180 days of school, but I know of no air conditioned schools around here which would make it unbearable in the afternoons.They do run summer school, and it does get warm but it is over by noon.
This being a tourist area means most kids work all summer. Parents would fill the school committee meeting to complain if year round school was the topic. They get angry starting school before Labor Day.
I’m sorry that those guys can’t find stuff to keep them busy. There are a lot of opportunities. You just have to look!!
I love being retired. It will be 14 years this summer.

I couldn’t imagine spending 14 years everyday with my wife. 🙂 You are single which makes it easier to be retired that long.

My friend down the street has also been retired 14 years. His wife retired two years earlier than that. They are both quite busy and enjoy each other. I’m betting they do get on each other’s nerves every now and then but it probably was the same before they retired. I have two other sets of friends who are retired. They are loving it, bot of them in each set.

It is sometimes difficult, well maybe lots of times, but I would still make the same choice I did. I loved teaching.
