My mother was ever so proud that I knew this by heart when I was 5. I always wondered about throwing up the sash.

    Do you think they figured kids wouldn’t know what “coursers” were? (I mean, clearly they shortened the poem in general, but it doesn’t change the verse’s scan, so it seems odd.)

      sprite,
      I’m guessing they decided coursers was archaic. I new they were reindeer when my mother would read this, the full poem, to us. “Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash,” made me think twice. Why was he throwing up the sash? Even more importantly, why did he swallow the sash?
