The german cover by Gus Backus is very similar and was a big hit in the 60’s but the phrase is older and still a common mother’s saying. I guess doctors couldn’t blame the song here.

I think kids have been putting things in their ears and noses since the beginning of humanity. I can see a young cave kid putting rocks in his nose.
