minicapt,
In one of the older cemeteries here is a headstone which says A Chinese Woman. She had been brought to the cape by a sea captain. Many of them sailed to China and brought back goods, china and other treasure. She is the only known Chinese woman who lived here.
We have a horrible history with the Chinese who came here. At one point only men could immigrate. Women were not welcome as the authorities didn’t want the Chinese to procreate. The west coast, given its geographic proximity, was where more of the Chinese arrived and stayed though many did work on the railroad.
This article is filled with the animosity with which the Chinese were held.
