“Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.”

The clouds and the on again off again rain have put a damper on my day, literally and figuratively. I just can’t seem to scare up enough energy to do anything but sit and watch television; however, I’m watching Syfy, not MSNBC.

It is warm right now, but that will change. By the late afternoon, we’ll be down into the 40’s, sweatshirt weather. It will be autumnal (I love this word).

When I went to get the papers, I was struck by how quiet the morning was. There was no breeze to rustle the leaves, no one was outside and no cars traveled down the street. I stood outside for a bit.

This is my favorite season. I used to think the Cape didn’t have much color until my first autumn back from Africa when I found the color so beautiful, so bright with reds and yellows. I saw cranberry bogs filled with deep red, ripe berries and watched when they were harvested. Pumpkins and sheafs of wheat decorated front steps. Mums in autumn colors came alive in the gardens. I fell in love with fall.

I have a couple of errands to do today. Gracie will come along to keep me company. She loves rides. She stands on the console between the front seats and looks out the windshield. When we stop at lights, she sticks her head out the back window. I swear she smiles.

I am losing my mind. I bought a bag of anise bears. The other night I ate so many I decided to put the bag away to eliminate temptation. Last night, I went to get the bag. I couldn’t find it. I looked in all my usual hiding places and in some odd places like the fridge just in case. It seems I did a remarkable job at keeping temptation away. I never did find those anise bears.

I have moved in to full Fall mode. The bike has been returned to the basement reflecting Big Rick’s prolonged absence, the window screens have all been marked and taken down, I am in and out of the hardware stores getting stuff I need – how do I fix a Stinger flashlight ?

I guess I am about a week away from a serious effort to rake but it’s coming

      My Dear Hedley,
My lawn is now cleared of pine needles, but even the slightest wind will drop more. This will keep happening through November. Luckily, I just write the check for someone else’s work.

My windows in the bedroom are still open but all I have to do is shut and lock them and they’ll be ready for winter. I, however, am not ready for winter!

It’s just starting to feel like autumn here in North Texas. Although football has been going on at all levels since late August the last couple of days and the forecast for the week really have an autumn feel. The trees are still green but the ninety degree days should be a distant memory until May.

The National Weather Service gave the long range winter forecast yesterday and for the South they are predicting a warmer and dryer winter. Here in Texas our average temperature for winter is 48 degrees and we get an average of 76 inches of precipitation. I’m hoping for warmer and no snow or ice. 🙂

      Bob,
We never do get days in the 90’s. Boston does, but the ocean always keeps us cooler. We had warm days last which were more like summer. Now we’ll finally get some fall weather,

The prediction for us was less snow than last winter. I’m glad for that!

Nasty weather over here, windy, rainy and no higher temperature than 34F I even saw some small snowflakes for a while. I just refused to do any errands today even though I really should have, the weather was just too bad.

I did however bake a bread and I have to admit that it was a total success 🙂 So delicious that I ate too many cheese sandwiches just because it tasted so yummy 🙂 I might have to bake another tomorrow again 🙂

    Have a great day!

    Christer.

      Christer,
I too decided to stay home as it has been raining on and off all day. Now the wind is really blowing so the big storm must be coming. Further north may get snow tonight.

I love homemade bread and probably would have eaten it too.

      Enjoy your evening!
