We moved from NYC to Dallas Texas in April of 1953. By June my parents realized that our apartment needed air conditioning. The Attac fan just wouldn’t do the job when the temperature reached triple digits. My dad bought a window unit similar to the one pictured. He installed it in the living room and we slept on mattresses on the floor through the rest of the summer. Very few people had central AC in those days.

Bob,
We didn’t have AC until the 70’s. My parents put them in each bedroom. I loved it when I went to visit them and could blast the air in the guest room.
I used to sleep downstairs as my bedroom is on a third floor here. Finally I got one for my bedroom then later I got central air. I can’t imagine not having it especially on days like today: unbelievably hot and humid.
