“Life isn’t all fricasseed frogs and eel pie.”

I would have guessed today is cooler than it is if I hadn’t gone outside. The view from my window is of a dark, cloudy day with a breeze strong enough to ruffle leaves and sway the tops of trees and smaller branches. It is definitely a long sleeve day, maybe even a sweatshirt day.

Fern, Gracie and I slept in this morning. They must have been cold as they were right next to me, Fern on one side, Gracie on the other. I hated to get up as they had to move when I did. When I patted Fern good morning, I could feel the warmth of her fur on the side where she had leaned against me. Cats do like being cozy.

I have started this third paragraph several times and not been happy with any of them. That happens sometimes. My mind doesn’t settle too deeply on any one thing. It stays in the shallow end. Even the papers today gave me little pleasure. I did finish the crossword and the cryptogram, but it was only in the sports pages where I could find some optimism and even that was threaded a bit. The Trump quotes had me cursing out loud. I didn’t count the numbers of assaults and murders reported in the metro section but thumbed right pass those stories. Business had the story of the peanuts and salmonella and VW’s fake air tests. Even the Cape had a murder, a body was found at one of the rest areas. The safest sections to read were the weather and the comics.

I just looked out the window, and the sun is shining. It sneaked in while I was complaining. It seems it might be a nice day after all.

Get out ! Volkwagen installed a defeat code in the emissions control on 11 million diesel cars and when they are not subject to emissions testing they spit out 30 to 40 times regulatory levels ? And this only came to light because the EPA picked it up and demanded full disclosure ?

“Deeply Sorry” says Winterkorn. Huh ? You conspired to falsify results, I guess you are sorry that you got caught.

VW Diesel is so 1980s anyways

FIFA and VW – who do we catch next ?

      My Dear Hedley,
This is the age of I’m sorry. Do it knowingly, make money and hide what you did is the new business model. Maybe I should add political model as well. It is getting harder to look on the bright side of life.

Much the same news here and especially thge VW story is big here! No one would ever believe VW to do something like this on purpose, many other car makers but not VW! They have always had a good reputation here, I think they after Volvo always have been the second biggest brand here.

We get to know all about Trump too and I’m still puzzled over the fact that he can behave like that and still be so popular 🙂

Cloudy and drizzly here today, I don’t mind I’ve been indoors all day 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Hi Christer,
VW is in big trouble right now. Good luck on trying to explain all that deception.

The reaction to Trump perplexes me. That people can still like him after all he says amazes me. I think he won’t last, but if he does, the democratic party would be happy.

We were on the deck for a while, but it is now chilly. The summer is now over!

      Feel better!

Kat, meanwhile Xi Jinping arrives in Seattle while Pope Francis is greeted in DC. Plenty of brightness.

I saw a candidate for President of the United States on late night TV making up doggie songs – there goes Rhymin’ Carly ?

Yes, VW is in the news. Punish them hard, they haven’t deserved better!
Everyone knows they all manipulate results but this is just bad. We don’t really expect help or better laws from our government, our automobile manufacturers are holy cows and sadly they have more political influence here than all climate and health lobbyists together.
A useful advice I’ve learned from our current news: Don’t touch 80 years old rusty pesticide cans! Experts desperately try to remove them from a house for about a week and the whole area around has to be evacuated at least once because this stuff may explode when slightly moved.

      Birgit,
I so agree-nail VW. They deserve it.

Big business rules the Republican roost here. The party has always been friendly to big business and laws are enacted to save them from high taxes and law which restrain them.

Good to know! I’ll stay away from rusty pesticide cans!

    Hi Kat,
The news today was really lousy. The last straw for me was the Marco Rubio remark about women looking forward to and enjoying their abortions. I don’t know if he really said it but it sounds so much like something one of these ignoramuses would say. My brain gears seized up too much to fact check at that point.
I turned to an online course about the ancient Greeks and read ancient Greek poets instead. Sappho is interesting. The rest were so-so except for the one who said “The fox has many tricks. The hedgehog has only one. A big one.” I thought that was deep. Could be symptomatic of brain gears seizing up. 🙂

Today was cool and brightly overcast. There were periods of sun scattered throughout the day. Now it’s mostly clouds with bits of blue sky but no brightness. Just grey.
I’m considering removing the AC unit from the window soon. I think it will be okay to do that now.

    Enjoy the evening.

      Hi Caryn,
I missed that piece of news, and I’m glad. I don’t think I could have added that to all the horrific news I read today.

No, I agree that the adage is a wise one. Hedgehogs aren’t often in my thoughts, but I think they deserve consideration. They’re actually sort of cute.

My friend came around three and we sat on the deck eating appetizers and having a few drinks. It was our good-bye summer afternoon. It started to get cool around 6 so we ended our summer tribute.

      Have a great evening!

If you want to get depressed consider that Dr. Ben Carson said that he doesn’t think that a Muslim can legally become President. I don’t know which constitution he reads but the one the founding fathers wrote requires the President to be at least 35 years old and a natural born citizen. Today at lunch two of my colleagues agreed with him. When I disagreed one guy said that he didn’t want a man as President who has to swear into office to Allah and not God. Maybe Pope Francis can straighten them all out while he is here in the U.S. because Allah is just another name for the same deity. The three monotheistic religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Technically, Ted Cruz was born in Canada and is therefore not eligible to become President. The good doctor Carson nor any of the other anti-immigration touting Republican candidates ever brings that one up during a debate.

    Hot and dry again today.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bob,
I couldn’t believe when he said that. It reminded me of 1960 when Kennedy was running and people were saying a Catholic could never be President because the Pope would be running this country. That showed ignorance back then about a whole religion and now we’re hearing it again about a different religion.

You’re right-being born in Canada means you can’t be President. Of course that wouldn’t come up.

      Cool and dry here.
