Chelsea Morning: Joni
Today Joni Mitchell is 71 so I have posted some of favorite songs. This one is my all time favorite. The Clouds album was with me in Ghana, and I think I listened almost every night. My friends Bill and Peg and I always saw the oranges as green, like the ones in the markets in Ghana. The imagery in this song is so amazing: “with the sun through yellow curtains” is one, but my favorite is, “And the sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses.”
Happy Birthday, Joni!

Oh, thank goodness — it’s only Joni’s birthday. When I saw my email notifications that you’d posted to the blog, there were all these Joni song titles and I thought, “Oh no! Joni died!” Gruesome? Morbid? No doubt, but I’ve gotten to that age where the obituaries are one of the first things I check in the news. Just like my parents and grandparents used to do. Happy BIRTH day, Joni!

im6,
I don’t blame you for thinking she might have died. Lately we have lost several singers and musicians, but luckily, not Joni.
I check the local obits as well but mostly to see how old the people were. The average age is in the 80’s.

“Court and Spark”, “The Last time I saw Richard” “Raised on Robbery” “Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter” …I am sure that there are lots of others.

MDH,
I hear that voice and it can be nobody but Joni. She has such a way with chords and notes. Her jazz rhythms are amazing.
As with Greg, after the first few notes, tI heard a different Joni than usual. I too like her.

J,
I hadn’t heard this before. Joni has that jazzy sound on this song. She doesn’t hit the high notes the way she used to, but I con’t care This is a great sing for Joni!
