“We are perishing for want of wonder, not for want of wonders.”

No jumping out of bed into the shower this morning, not with the house at 61˚. I was cozy under the comforter, but I should have realized how cold the house was as Gracie was leaning on me on one side and Fern was leaning on the other. The house is now 68˚ so I have turned off the heat. It is supposed to get warmer starting today.

Columbus Day was really yesterday. I used to get it off from school every year unless it happened to be a Sunday. Back then holidays stayed put.

Kids grow up believing in all sorts of stuff. I believed in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. I knew there were ghosts and witches and men with hooks instead of hands. Tinker Bell was real because she used to fly over the field below my house with her light blinking as she flew. Most times she was with a bunch of friends. I was easily amazed by the world around me. I loved watching the yellow and black caterpillars walk on a tree limb, and I knew they’d be butterflies some day. I watched the progression of tadpoles into frogs at the swamp. I got to go behind the scenes at the zoo because my brother and I befriended a zoo keeper. I fed some of the animals, even the elephant. I never tired of watching the cows at the dairy farm or the horses running in the field near my house. Life was filled to the brim with adventure and wonder.

When I got older, a teenager, my friends and I had the best fun. We celebrated Mardi Gras, sneaked food upstairs into the library, left school early with permission from the addled nun who taught the class, bowled, played miniature golf, went to the drive-in and had hay rides in the fall. We even went square dancing once. They were all adults but they decided to let us stay. It was so much fun to learn to do-si-do. The world wasn’t as filled with wonder, but I was having too much fun to notice.

College was so many things. It was great friends, a lot of partying and classes here and there. I loved college, but it too lacked that sense of wonder I had as a kid. I’d figured the older we all got, the fewer wonders there were to see. I can’t believe how wrong I was.

I know it was Africa where I found my lost sense of wonder. The people, the colors, the languages, the markets, the night sky were all amazing. Everywhere I went I saw something new, something remarkable. I learned again to look at the world with wide eyes.

I am still filled with that sense of wonder. It’s like a huge gift which never stops giving. I notice everything and stop sometimes along the road to get an eyeful, to fill my soul with all the beauty I can see. Sometimes it is as simple as a marsh with tall reeds or geese flying in formation. It is so wonderful having that kid back!

    Columbus Day was started to give the Italian immigrant community a celebration and parade in New York similar to the St. Patrick day celebration. I noticed that in Seattle they are swapping Colombus Day for Indigenous Peoples day.


    I still find things to wonder about every day. Usually I wonder how other people think and express their opinions. The human mind is the most wonderous thing in the universe. After all a deity is a product of the human mind. 🙂

      I think changing the day makes perfect sense. It should be a day which honors everyone. Columbus may have been Italian but his trip was financed by the Spanish. They should be a part of it or there wouldn’t have been a trip. Columbus was just lucky in stumbling on America.

      I wonder about things I see. The human mind is sometimes far too strange fro venturing.

    Foggy morning and foggy evening here and fairly cold both times. The day however looked rather nice since the sun shone most parts of it.

    I never lost that feeling since I very often was out in the wild, either on the ocean with my sailing boat or out into the deep forest where I rented a cottage. Especially in the forest that feeling of wonder is easily found again, every stone or fallen tree can hide trolls or gnomes, I won’t allow myself to stop believeing in them 🙂

    I was however very happy to know that the Yule Gnome wasn’t real since he scared the crap out of me 🙂 🙂 🙂

      I love fog and love foggy mornings the most. Today ended up being a nice day here all day.

      I so agree with everything you said in the second paragraph. Around here it is the beach which is sheer wonder. The windy days are amazing there.

      The Yule Gnome would have scared anybody!!

    Egg and Cheese Bagel
    Prep Time
    Cook Time
    Total Time
    9 Servings
    2 boxes (9 ct.) Three Cheese Bagel Bites®
    4 eggs
    salt & pepper
    In a large bowl, season eggs with salt and pepper and scramble.
    Turn on stove to medium-high heat and add eggs to large skillet pan. Cook until desired doneness.
    Prepare Bagel Bites® according to package instructions.
    Top 9 bagel halves with scrambled eggs.
    Top each sandwich with other bagel half.
    Optional: Add either bacon or sausage.

    what you need
    1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding
    1/2 cup sugar, divided
    1 tsp. ground cinnamon
    10 Granny Smith apples (3 lb.), peeled, sliced
    1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
    6 Tbsp. butter, melted, divided
    12 vanilla wafers, coarsely chopped
    1/4 cup PLANTERS Sliced Almonds
    make it

    MIX dry pudding mix, 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Toss fruit with 1/4 cup butter in large bowl. Add pudding mixture; mix lightly. Spoon into slow cooker; cover with lid. Cook on LOW 4 to 6 hours (or HIGH 2 to 3 hours).

    MEANWHILE, combine chopped wafers, nuts, remaining butter and sugar in shallow microwaveable dish. Microwave on HIGH 1 min.; stir. Microwave 1-1/2 to 2 min. or until golden brown, stirring every 30 sec. Cool.

    SPRINKLE with nut mixture just before serving.

    SPECIAL EXTRA Top each serving with a dollop of thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping.APPLE VARIETIESLook for apples that are firm and well colored with smooth, blemish-free skins. Choose the variety that best suits your needs.     A student taught me this one:
    1. Take a coffee cup. Fill it with HOT water.
    @. Get out: an egg, butter, an English muffin, and from the store deli, now in your refrig: a slice of ham and a slice of cheese
    3. Empty the hot water, run the butter around the inside of the damp warm cup and break an egg into it. Put butter away.
    4. Put English muffin into toaster.
    5. Put cup into microwave: run it +/- 30 seconds, depending on its power rating (trial and error). Bell rings; stir egg; hit it another 30 seconds.
    6. Put toasted English muffin onto paper towel. Drape a slice of ham across both halves. Drape a slice of cheese on top of that.
    7. Egg done. Slide knife or fork around inside of cup; dump egg onto one of the muffin halves.
    8. Fold muffin sandwich closed, wrapped in paper towel. Run water into cup; leave in sink. Eat breakfast sandwich on the way to wonder…
    I tried his instructions. It works. That was years ago. I still eat these.

      I love this-so easy and so portable. I’ll add it to my recipes as I do leave early sometimes for places and am lucky if I manage coffee.!
