“Sand was dribbling out of the bag of her attention, faster and faster.”

Today is a bit chilly and rainy, and I love it. The house is dark and cozy and I feel as if I’m in a cocoon, safe and happy. The two cats and the dog are sleeping, each in her usual spot. Fern is behind me lying on the afghan on the back of the couch. Maddie is sleeping in the warm light from the lamp, and Gracie is in her crate with her head on her dog pillow. I slept in this morning because I was awake until well after three. I just couldn’t get to sleep. I finished my book, watched a couple of documentaries on my iPad, got up and changed the two litter boxes and washed the cat food mat in the upstairs bathroom. By about three I was thinking I might just get up and find something to do, like clean that cabinet which has been driving me crazy because I have no idea what’s in the back of it. I’m guessing a few old mice nests as that’s where some lived before they were relocated by Grace and me. Mostly I want to find my apple peeler/corer and my old double loaf pan. I know they’re in that cabinet probably way in the back. I’m hoping to find a few surprises as well.

I’m having one of my distraction days. Nothing gets done straight through. I feel a little bored with what I’m doing and stop to do something else. Earlier, between the two papers, I decided to look through the two small wooden boxes on my table. It was like finding treasure chests filled with memories. The first small box had all the commemorative pins I got from working the Boston Marathon. It also had a Peace Corps cloth badge and a returned volunteer pin. Two nails were on the bottom. They are the size I usually want for something but can never find in my tool drawer. I love the red bead bracelet I found. It came from Ghana. Several coins were on the bottom. A couple were from Iceland but most were from Ghana. They are coins which are no longer used. My favorite was the twenty pesewa coin. That was the cost of a taxi ride anywhere in the city of Accra. I thought of all the arguments I had with taxi drivers who wanted to charge more. One even said he hated Peace Corps, a guess as to who I was on his part, because they always knew the right price.

The other box is filled with addresses, a few boxes of wooden matches, an old Winston lighter, an eyeglass kit and a few odd items in a small plastic bag. I bought them just because I liked them and figured I’ll find a way to use them.

The last is a cigar box, and I’ve saved that one for later, for my next distraction.

I had my annual vehicle inspection day today, I’ll have to go back again but not for what I thought but for a few other problems like a rusted break pipe.

I took the day of and could have done so much here at home but chosed to do nothihg 🙂 The day has been sunny and nice, a bit chilly perhaps but I didn’t care, we had frost during the night so anythibng felt warm and nice anyway.

The sky is clear and it feels like another frost night is on its way, I wouldn’t mind scraping the car windows if it at least had meant all the mosquitoes had died from frost bites 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I read your blog this morning. How is it nothing seems to go as planed. The rusted pipes were not a good surprise.

I used to love having a day off, even if it was a sick day. It was quite a luxury sleeping late.

It is still raining here but gently. The weatherman said rain through tomorrow.

      You have very hearty mosquitos.

      Have a great day off!

It’s a bit different watching a football game concentrating on the efforts of the Left Tackle but that we did as #72 had an excellent game (no natural bias) and NEP were crushed.

The AR has moved to a Friday which is fine by me. Shelley and Nici are racing for Detroit and there seems to be some general bad behavior with pushing and shoving, Cut it our contestants this is the Amazing Race.

      My Dear Hedley,
I watched Eric as well. He had a great game.

I was embarrassed for the Pats. If anyone asks, I am now a lacrosse fan!.

We had our usual tradition last Friday for the AR. We played games and ate appies then watched and enjoyed our dessert during the last half. I was glad to see them go. When they pulled out their matching pink headrests on the plane, I groaned.

They obviously didn’t notice that one of the firefighters was already in the taxi. They pouted which was another reason to say adieu to them.

The Realtor Gals were cute but that was about it. I do so enjoy the show and Friday night means that there are no longer endless time changes due to the NFL and reruns of 60 minutes.

      MDH,
That too made me glad for the change. I hated never knowing during football season when the AR would really start.

I watch it with my two friends and we just love from when the music starts to sorry, you have been eliminated.

Kat, that is a dynamite quote.

      Mark,
The quote was on the first page of the first site I visited. I went through all of the site’s pages but went right back to this quote. I felt the same way.

    Hi Kat,
Oddly enough, I started reading your post yesterday morning, got distracted by something Piki Dog was getting into. Then I decided to make chicken stock and wash dishes. After that I decided it was time to wind that skein of yarn into a cake since it’s been sitting on the end of the couch for a week. Having done that, I figured I should try some test swatches with it because I don’t know what it wants to be. Apparently it doesn’t want to be anything but admired and petted for its silky loveliness. 🙂
    So now I’m back.
I love wooden boxes that hold treasures. I checked out one of mine a few days ago and found my Mauser folding knife with the saw blade, some snowflake stickers and Rocky’s Puerto Rican rabies tag. I also found enough dollar bills to pay the paper boy which was very lucky because I had no cash on hand. 🙂
It’s raining and cold here. A good day to curl up on the couch with a good book and a warm dog or two (even if one of the dogs is squirmy and fond of licking the Kindle screen).
Enjoy the day. Hope you find wonderful things in your cigar box.

      Hi Caryn,
You are the perfect example of distractions. You start something, move on to something else and maybe not even get back to what you started.

The cigar box had the DVD of Peace Corps 1969-1971, an assortment of slides from many of us that was put together as a wonderful history. I had two old plastic red Happy Birthday decorations, an old picture of my two aunts, my father’s sisters, a McGovern-Eagleton pin, old postcards of Stoneham, spider earrings, a boxer pin and some bookmarks. It was definitely a treasure trove.

Rainy and dark here as well. I was going to do some errands, but I’m putting them off until tomorrow.

      Enjoy this stay cozy day!
