A woman tells her doctor, ‘I’ve got a bad back.’ The doctor says, ‘It’s old age.’ The woman says, ‘I want a second opinion.’ The doctor says: ‘Okay – you’re ugly as well.’
I made it! What took so long was I ran into people I hadn’t seen in years and it takes a while to catch up on years. When I realized how late it was, I added an errand: lunch. I went to a new place with Greek take-out, and I did, a gyros and Greek iced coffee. When I got home and walked into my house, I was hit with a blast of hot air and humidity. I quickly closed all the windows and turned on the air-conditioning. It is 79˚ outside, sweat weather, and when you add humidity, you have intolerable weather. My back almost made it. Adding the extra errand did me in. I will now do nothing more today except loll in the cool house and drink iced coffee. All I’m missing are bon-bons.
Last night Gracie was panting so much she shook the bed. I swear I was getting sea sick. It felt like being on a boat in rough seas because the mattress was going up and down and up and down over and over. I kept the air-conditioner in my bedroom window for times such as those so I turned it on and Gracie finally stopped panting and went to sleep. Right now she is enjoying the cool house and is sleeping on the couch. When I finish here, I think I’ll join her.
The birds this morning were amazing. The male Baltimore oriole was perched on a tall yellow flower and was eating its seeds. He flew off and came back a couple of times. The Mrs. was having grape jelly. There were so many chickadees I lost count, and I do think there was some spooning as a few birds were feeding other birds and they flew off together for a bit of privacy I suspect. I watched gold finches, titmice, nuthatches and a couple of cat birds.
Don’t forget the USA plays Belgium at 4:00. For those of you stuck at work I found a helpful page entitled How to Watch the US vs. Belgium Match at the office:

I hope that the extermination is symbolic of action on the field.

And so we leave but with our heads held high…USA USA
July 1, 2014 at 7:08 pm
MDH,
We did have a wonderful showing. As the announcer said, “They leave on their shields.”

Here in Arlington Texas they opened up AT&T stadium and showed the game on the big screens. You know, Gerry Jones’ billion dollar palace of football. Now that the USA team is coming home we should all be proud of their accomplishment against the world’s best teams. Soccer may have a slim to almost none chance of gathering a large enough audience exceeding the number of fans watching, roller derby, arena football or the Woman’s National Basketball league.

Good thing they had the roof closed because it was 95 degrees and humid outside.

Bob,
I don’t know a single person who watches roller derby. I didn’t even know it is televised. The same goes for arena football and the WNBA.
I have to disagree with you. The numbers of people who watched the USA in all of its games was huge, far more than anyone expected and far more than the sports (roller derby is scripted, like wrestling) you mentioned. Bars around here were filled as were the places all over the country with outside screens.

I would like you to give serious consideration to stop these kind of directed and pointed posts. They are negative and not in keeping with this community.
It is quite clear that they are pointed at me – I have no idea why
Thanks for your consideration

I only hope that the excitement over the USA team’s showing will last. Professional soccer has never gathered much traction in the past.

Bob,
I think where you live also plays a part in whether you follow soccer. The Revolution, Massachusetts’ team also owned by Bob Kraft, play where the Patriots play, but they are trying to get their own stadium. Teams from England are playing at the stadium this week.
Soccer as a high school sport has been at my school since the early 60’s. My nephew in Colorado played club ball starting at 5 years, and it paid off hugely as he got a full boat to play Division 1 soccer.
I think of Texas as a football state, American football. That is probably why you don’t see soccer as having a good sized fan base.

Hi Kat,
Sorry about USA soccer. Maybe next time.
I read that Ann Coulter thinks…excuse me…says (thinking would require a brain cell) any increase in the numbers of “Americans” (quotations are hers) watching soccer is a sure sign of moral decay, due to Ted Kennedy’s change in the immigration laws back in the 60’s. All these immigrants are upping the numbers and when they learn to speak English they will watch football (meaning football) and baseball like real Americans.
Insert confused puppy head tilt and sound track of my inner voice saying in a tone of enlightenment, “Aha! You’re an idiot, aren’t you?”
I may take up watching soccer as a political statement. 🙂
It’s hot and sticky again. Even the dogs didn’t want to stay outside on the 9:30 AM walk. We are all chilling out inside.
Enjoy the day. Hope the back is improved.

Hi Caryn,
Yesterday’s game was amazing and left us with such hope for the future.
OMG, I can’t believe that even she said that. Soccer has huge numbers of kids playing and I do believe most of them do speak English, around here anyway. My nephew, who is now in his early 30’s, got a full scholarship to play at a division 1 school, Oregon State, and he was even born here. His 8 year old son also plays soccer. I wonder why he doesn’t play real football.
Look at how many people watched the games! Without doubt that woman is an idiot.
Great cooling breeze here.
My back is great so, of course, I was out sweeping and cleaning the deck!
Have a great afternoon.

Caryn,
I cursed aloud a few times. The woman is an idiot!
July 2, 2014 at 8:01 pm
Caryn, thanks for the link. Her failing logic and conclusions are hilarious. You’ve probably heard me laughing across the ocean. She won’t care, I’m just a soccer-loving primitive Non-American 😉

I missed tyat match, too late for me and I’m sorry Your team lost. That was the only one I really wanted to see. Now I have no team I like and want to see 🙂 Well more time doing other things instead.
We actually have sunshine and warmish weather here today! The rainmmade all the biting flies hatch so the dog hgouse was filled with them. It’s a good thing my vacation starts next Monday because the dogs have no where to hide from those flies when they find their way in to the doghouse.
Anne Coulter reached even our news 🙂 🙂 🙂 I knew she’s a bit odd (I’m kind bu writing it that way, I guess You know what I mean 🙂 ) So a sign of high moral is when the athletes gets injured or perhaps dies? 🙂 🙂 🙂 I guess she must have a vacuum leak in her head 🙂 🙂 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
It was a spectacular match. The US goalie was magnificent, except twice.
It is warm here too but there is a breeze. The sun pops in and out as we are expecting rain later. No bugs yet.
A bit odd is being kind. She’s downright crazy!!
Enjoy your evening!
