“Spiders so large they appear to be wearing the pelts of small mammals.”

The day is warm. The sun pops in and out. It is an open the windows and let the fresh air in sort of day. I have an errand or two to do later. I still walk oddly because of the aches and pains left over from the fall, but I have to go out. I figure the cats will want to be fed later as they just got their last can. What’s with these animals wanting to eat every day?

Gracie eats the best food. The list of ingredients starts with meat then goes on to the fruits and vegetables. I swear if I heated the turducken and served it over toast people would enjoy it, but it was different when I was a kid. Duke, my boxer, ate two cans of dog food a day, of horse meat. Feeding him was gross as the food didn’t smell good and the last thing I was for it to touch me. It also gave him room clearing gas. Most were of the silent but deadly form. It was always best to sit up wind from Duke.

Some of my friends squealed at spiders. I always thought that was silly. Spiders had no interest in us. They were hoping for flies or other stray insects though I do sometimes think of The Fly caught in the web and yelling, “Help me. Help me,” as the spider slowly walked toward him. I did figure, though, that was an anomaly. Some noises in the night scared me like people walking or the window getting scratched, but I wore a brave front and always asked, “Is anyone there?” Now that is silly. What homicidal maniac is going to answer, “I am, and I’m here to dismember you.” I had this idea that if I sounded brave I’d scare away the man with hook or the hatchet. As I never saw one, I must have been successful.

I used to walk home at night from being with my friends. No one walked in my direction. The rest walked together the other way. Once a police car stopped and offered me a ride home. He knew me which is why he stopped. I took the ride. When he got to my street, he turned on all the lights and let me out. I figured the neighbors were watching from all their windows wondering what was going on. I waved and went inside the house. I was never afraid walking home alone. The biggest news in the police blotter of the local paper was woman hears sounds in her yard, kids making noise, and cars leaving rubber and speeding. My town was not a hot bed of crime.

    Hi Kat,
I think your Gracie eats some of the same stuff as my Rocky. He gets canned Merrick mixed with dry Fromm Lamb and Lentils. The Merrick names sound like stuff I want to order and they smell good, too. They taste okay enough to lick off my fingers if I happen to get sloppy.
My childhood dog Duke ate a can of Strongheart every day. I can still see the blue can with the German Shepherd on the label. I don’t know if it was Rin Tin Tin but I always thought so.
I just googled. The dog was Etzel von Oeringen. From Germany. He was White Fang in the 1925 movie adaptation.
Anyway, the food smelled like really good hash but tasted like really bad dog food. Because, of course, I had to try it. For Science. 🙂

Spiders don’t bother me. Spider webs sticking to my face bother me. It’s spider season in my cellar. If I haven’t gone down there in a few days, I have to do the windshield wiper move with my arms to clear away any stray webs that may have appeared in the interim.

It’s nice up here today. Sunny with some clouds. Warm but not hot. Perfect.
    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
That’s exactly the canned food Gracie eats and all her treats are Merrick as well. Her dry food is Earthborn Holistic, and she loves it. To her, though, it is merely a snack.

My Duke ate Alpo, and I was never enticed, even for science’s sake, to taste it. Wow, even famous dogs get endorsements.

I don’t love spider’s web in my face though most times I also do that windshield wiper move to avoid them.

The sun is still in and out. When it is out, the day is ugly but when it returns, the day is lovely.

      Have a wonderful afternoon!

My dogs only eat dry food ( and everything nasty they can find outdoors) but I always pour hot water over it before they eat and quite often I mix in cooked liver or kidney. They rarely fart when it’s only the dry food but liver and kidney tends to start the gas manufacturing in them 🙂

I was terrified of spiders until I moved to the countryside. It started when I was a kid and we were at our súmmer cottage. They were fixing the floor and one evening when I was in bed one of those huge hairly black spiders that lives beneath the floor came walking on the sheets of my bed. I saw how it came closer and closer to my face and then it walked right over me. I started screaming like drazy and continued to do so every time I saw one of those big spiders 🙂 🙂 🙂

I also always walked home alone, my home town was safe back then. Now gangs have wars there and being in the wrong part of town at the wrong time can mean being shot. I was never scared but then again I wasn’t always sober either 🙂 🙂 🙂

Almost summer warm here today and it will be better and better they say, I’ll believe it when it happens 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Gracie uses her dry food as a filler after the canned. The cats are the same way. They prefer canned but do eat their dried.

I figure it is an experience like that which makes people afraid of spiders, especially when they are little kids. I don’t think any of my sisters are afraid of them either.

Here you can probably still walk around but everywhere to go is too far away. There isn’t any wrong part of town.

I’m with you in being a non-believer about the weather. Yesterday morning my house was 63˚ when I woke up. Today it was warmer, but the nights are still chilly.

      Have a great evening!

No problems with spiders, any mosquito catching spider is welcome. No sympathy with mosquitoes! Our commonly found European Garden Spider looks actually quite nice.
Are there any dust-eating spiders? I need some for spring cleaning my house 😉

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Birgit,
I am with you and mosquitos. They love me and fly around my ears jut to let me know they’re around. My Ghanaian language instructor explained why they do that. It seems mosquito fell in love with ear who rejected him. Mosquito told ear that he would buzz her forever so she wouldn’t forget her rejection of him.

If you find any dust eaters, let me know!

It’s been record high temps for this area–over 80 degrees.

I love the explanation of spider falling in love with ear. I try not to kill spiders in the house, but sometimes I have no choice. Some cats are bug catchers, but not mine.

I would say I grew up in a non- crime area ( which was mostly true) but my home was robbed when I was about twelve. They took things that broke my heart. It was an “inside job”, a woman who worked at my parents store and her partner.

Not only does Cookie wish to every day, but like most kitties, she is picky about what she eats. She once showed me she didn’t like the placement of the food by kicking it all over the floor.

I, like most people, think of Charlotte’s Web, when I think of spiders. I also wish they had spiders that would eat dust bunnies and in exchange for not killing them, do a bit of house cleaning. Fair is fair.

I saw the movie “Stuart Little” for the first time. I still don’t like mice, except for Stuart.

I am having a slow recovery–it’s been almost 4 month. I have little patience.

    Waving,
    Lori and her Crew.

      Lori and Crew!

We don’t even get into the 80’s until August. That is just too hot for now. I’ll take the 70’s.

I don’t kill spiders either. Sometimes I get them on paper and put them outside. My cats prefer flying bugs to eat than spiders.

That is horrible. I would feel so violated if my house were broken into and stuff taken. I really don’t have much of value except a TV and a camera. The rest is just sentimental.

I love Charlotte’s Web. I read Stuart Little but never saw the movie. I might suggest you read The Rats of NIMH or see that movie. You would even like rats after that.

I am sorry it is so slow a recovery. I’m hoping that spring and summer will do the trck!

      Waving,
All of us here on Cape Cod

Have you ever eaten a Turduken? It’s a turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. It’s a New Orleans Thanksgiving treat like a deep fried Turkey. They are a Cajun kind of thing.

If it crawls, creeps is an insect or a reptile I want nothing to do with it. All of our fears of insects and reptiles are deep in our DNA since our ancestor small mammals were running around trying not to become lunch for the dinosaurs. That’s why most of the science fiction movies of the 1950s involved large insects or reptiles.

If you like clear dry 80s temperatures with light breezes then you would like today’s weather in North Texas.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bob,
I have eaten one. I ordered it for Thanksgiving one year. It was delicious. Layers of stuffing are also between the layers of meat. It is neat looking when you cut it.

I am not afraid of bugs, snakes (unless poisonous) or reptiles. When I lived in Africa, I was up close and personal with all of them. I just went along my daily life regardless.

If you like blue skies, lots of sun and mid 70’s you’d like it here.
