I looked it up and found out it isn’t a folk song which I thought it was. It was composed by a German after WWII. I did not know that!

This was the first song I ever learned to sing when I was a toddler at Dow AFB in Bangor. It was from an old 78 of beer hall music.
My brothers and sister spent their infancy and toddler years in Munich and had several of these 78s. When we moved to Austin and Bergstrom AFB my sister and her best friend Priscilla Beaulieu would dress me in a tiny pair of lederhosen and laugh like mad as I marched about singing this.

We had chorus once a week in high school. It was in the gym/auditorium. We sat in rows of seats which looked like those canvas director’s chairs. If one person stood and then sat down everyone felt it. This was a song we always sang and one which made us always do the chair thing on the
