Departure Bay is down the hill to the NE, less than half a mile from where I sit. The main ferry terminal to the mainland is on the south end of the Bay and we can check the arrivals and departures by the ferry horns, which are distinct.
This is “Queen of Nanaimo”:
Minicapt,
I chose this song because of the imagery and because I am a Diane Krall fan. I had no idea where the Bay is so I thank you.
I love the sound of fog horns and I love the horns blowing as the ferries leave Hyannis for the islands. I don’t hear them enough to know the distinctions between, but it would be neat to identify the ferries the way you can.
Also:
1. Ms Krall grew up in a sub-division which overlooks Departure Bay.
2. She was in the same classes as two of my sisters.
3. She and her husband have a home about 12mi up the road.
Minicapt,
Usually Hedley has all these connections to singers. Now I find you do as well.
Now I understand why this song is as fine as it is-we all feel lovingly about our homes.
“Just get me there and one we will stay
A long time off and far away
Now we’re skimming stones and
Exchanging rings
We’re scattering and diving in departure bay.”
Often I don’t like to listen to Diane Krall, boring dead music, but I like this song. Should I have to reduce a prejudice?
Thanks, Minicapt, for providing the location. This makes the song even better. The ferry passage to Vancouver Island was always a highlight when I visited my uncle who lives in the Greater Vancouver region.
I’m late today, chorus section rehearsal and a guitar open stage concert in the neighboring town. A quick check of my concert photos and then it’s time to go to bed.
Another Nanaimoite here, not born and raised but a transplant from the mainland.
Thanks for the Diann Krall song.
I’ve been lurking here for quite a while and reckon this is as good as time as any to say how much I appreciate your thoughtful posts and your taste in music.

Birgit,
I think you’re stuck not pigeonholing Diane anymore.
I really like this song as well. Her voice here has a depth missing from many of her other songs.
It seems you had a busy day: no wonder you’re tired given the hour.
Sleep well.

Always a pleasure when I post a song enjoyed by a Coffee friend!

Nice to meet you, Bruce. I’m glad you’re enjoying Coffee.
People who move to the Cape are called washashores. I have lived here since 1963 and that’s still what I am!
Thank you for your kind words.

I always see “Diana Krall”, not “Diane Krall”

Yes you do, Cristophe. I’m fix it!
