On Christmas Eve I like to go to a traditional service so I dropped in on the Lutherans tonight (Missouri Synod, of course). Was reading up on the carol in their hymnal. A much older song than I would have guessed. The 7 verses are based on 7 ancient antiphons that are recited during the last days of Advent.

Spaceman,
I haven’t ever thought about different services. That’s a great idea. I’ll have to remember that for next year!
Merry Christmas!

I wrote an acapella arrangement of this carol when I was the cantor at Emmaus Catholic. First, fifth and seventh verses. It’s my favorite too.

Beto,
I heard it when I was around 13 for the first time. I have loved it since.
