What happened to “the land of the free” in times of monitoring everyone regardless suspicion/trust or friend/enemy?
(Hi Big Brother, file my question.) Nevertheless,
Happy Holiday to you and all American readers!

Birgit,
I figure they’re welcome to check my e-mails. I just hope they don’t miss all that spam.
I know the system is alerted to respond to certain words like bombs or other suspicious words, and I think in these times when terrorists are both foreign and home-grown a little vigilance is a necessary evil.

Unfortunately, those days are over since 9/11. I am willing to allow the government to see the out side of the envelope of my E-mails if it helps to keep the many bad guys at bay. All freedom has limits. As Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said in a famous free speech case before the Supreme Court, “You can’t falsely yell fire in a crowded theater”.

I too am willing to concede a bit to the government; something I though I would never do, but we have lost our innocence and with that has come a loss of privacy and some freedoms.
