Stairway to Heaven: Led Zeppelin
Last night I watched The Kennedy Center Honors and Led Zeppelin was one of the honorees. This song brought down the house. Ann and Nancy Wilson sang the song backed by a gospel choir and with the late John Bonham’s son, Jason Bonham, on drums. My favorite scene from the audience during this song was Yo Yo Ma’s head bopping with the music.

My Dear Hedley,
It was amazing last night, a whole new sounding song. I had to play it today just because.

Strange missed that..Central Michigan were doing in Western Kentucky in the Motor City Bowl and young Eric Fisher of Rochester was solidifying his position as a First Round draft pick by the NFL.

My Dear Hedley,
It was a wonderful show except for the ballerina. That was a bit boring.

WTF ? Go to your room im6, what is this ?
Jimmy’s Dad owned Page Motors in Epsom, Pet Clark and I were both born at the District Hospital. If you haven’t seen Zep at the RAH and the whole show is available in a DVD box set, here is Page et al doing im6 covers and almost blowing up KTCC
Next year there will be a comprehensive reissue of the catalog, and I cant wait…meanwhile try and take your eyes of Page

MDH,
Such a name dropper you’ve become!
Sometimes even a cover can be amazing as last night’s was.

It was grand. I was fortunate and turned on the T.V. toward the end of the show, so I watched “Stairway to Heaven”– it was amazing. I had seen Zeppelin as a teen, and except for this song, I practically had my hands over my ears the entire time as the music was too loud. Thanks Kat and thanks im6 for placing the Youtube version here.
Waving,

Lori and Jewels,
Loud? That’s rock and roll!!
It was spectacular as were the earlier songs, but it was this which blew everyone away, even Robert Plant.

It sounded like heavy metal at the time. I was used to folk music concerts. I’ll go back and watch the earlier songs later.

Lori,
I am a lover of folk music but also rock and roll. Growing up in the 60’s meant listening to the best groups ever.

Just saw this entry on Facebook from NY Times Tech columnist:
“I could have done without the self-conscious closeups of audience members. But my God–whoever did the musical arrangement of this “Stairway” deserves his or her own Kennedy Center award!”
He then links to the above clip.

Oops… That’s NY Times columnist David Pogue

Did he mention sanitizing the Hammer of the Gods ?
December 27, 2012 at 6:34 pm
im6,
That is exactly what I would have said if I had the words. I really did enjoy Yo Yo Ma’s enjoyment of that arrangement.

Classic song and an alltime favorite. I collect covers if I stumble upon nice ones: funny Rolf Harris, flamenco guitar, opera style, folkrock, Tuba&banjo, Reggae, Tiny Tim, Doors cover band, Nashville fingerpicking, Dolly Parton, Zappa, … It’s difficult to ruin a real good song 😉

Birgit,
I have found a few covers I like even better than the original. The other covers I save are those which just about equal the original, and I’ve found many of those.
