Riu Chiu: The Monkees

The Monkees sang one version live on their show in 1967, and I have that version, but it is scratchy and difficult to hear. This is the studio version.

Wow!! Those boys could actually sing! I’ve got a similar version by the Modern Folk Quartet. Odd lyrics when translated from Spanish.

Kat, put your elves on this one… “Glorious Kingdom” by the Kingston Trio off their “Up Close” album. I’ve got a scratchy LP copy, but I cannot find it in digital. Joyous song! Merry Christmas!!

Speaking of the KT, here is their even better edition of the tune:

      Mark,
      Thanks! They sing it beautifully.

I didn’t even know this album until Jay Bird mentioned it. Now I’, going to hunt a bit and see what I can find.

This was not their Christmas album. The Christmas album was : “The Last Month of the Year”. An excellent album and I see that many of the songs from that album have been downloaded on youtube.

I think the song he was referring to (Glorious Kingdom on the Up Close album?) was probably a cover of the Weavers song: “Virgin Mary” which is on one of their Carnegie Hall albums.
        Or here?

Actually the KT “Glorious Kingdom” is on youtube and it’s a pretty sad cover of the Weavers original.

      Mark,
I went hunting all over for The Weavers version but couldn’t find it. To consule myself, I went and found The Kingston Trio’s Christmas album to download.
