Rum an Coca Cola became inbrolled in a copyright lawsuit in the late 1940s. Louis Nizer represented the plantiffs against Mory Amsterdam, of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and won. The case was discribed in Nizer’s book “My Life In Court”. Here is the reference:

I knew Morey had been involved in a copyright case, but I didn’t realize it was this song. So many songs are labeled traditional. It’s too bad the original writers are lost over time.
