“Never run in the rain with your socks on.”
The front page of The Cape Cod Times said the heat is heading our way. Generally the ocean keeps us cooler than off cape, but by Thursday we’ll be in the high 80’s closing in on 90. I expect to hibernate inside with the air conditioner on. I have to go to Falmouth this afternoon so I’ll stop and pick up a few books on the way. I can’t imagine anything worse than hibernating with nothing to read.
We had thunder and lightning last night during the rain storm. Neither was all that dramatic, always a disappointment to me. I love loud storms with torrential downpours.
When I was a kid, we used to love to stay outside during a summer rainstorm, the plain old rainstorms without any dramatics. I remember the rain was always softer in summer and seemed to invite us outside. We’d splash each other from the puddles and run along the sidewalk gutters filled with water. My hair and clothes would get soaked, but I never minded.
Running through the sprinkler was the next best thing to a rainstorm. We’d jump over it with long strides and arms spread as if we were competing in an Olympic event. The bravest among us would stand beside the sprinkler and get pelted by the cold water as it circled. Arms would be held close, crossed over our chests, as if to ward off the cold. We’d take breaks and lie on towels spread on the grass in the sun until we were warmed then it was back to the sprinkler. Our dog, Duke, loved to stop the sprinkler with his paw to drink the cold water. We’d watch him hold a sprinkler arm, slurp his fill and think him the smartest of dogs.
The sprinklers which go round and round have disappeared. Many of us have irrigation systems, and the only sprinklers I see are long and have one bar which sends the water back and forth. That wouldn’t have been any fun.

Greg,
We had rain last night, but the heat arrived this afternoon and will stay around for a while. The air conditioner is on, and I am quite comfortable. I have a feeling it will be running just about non-stop.
115° is hell.

We´ve had thunder here too today, but it was kind of lame to be honest. But the rain was so hard that it made much more noise than the actual thunder 🙂 🙂
I´ve always loved spring and summer rain, unless we have it all the time which isn´t unusual 🙂 But I´ve never run through a sprinkler in my life 🙂 I have one so perhaps I should try it a warm day 🙂 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
Dry today after the rain of last night. Hot today as well. Winter rain is just so dismal, and it makes the raw weather go right through to the bone. The summer rain sizzles on the sidewalk and steam rises. It sort of neat to watch.

We take Junie-Bug and run through the sprinklers here and he loves it. Last week Ann took him out in the rain and he was uncomfortable at first, then didn’t want to leave and come indoors. He is 2 years old.

Z&Me,
I’m glad to hear that the next generation is being introduced to the joys of the sprinkler. Soon enough he’ll be splashing in every puddle he finds.

Hi Kat,
We did the sprinkler thing, too. Ours was the fan type. We would run into the spray and jump over the sprinkler. And we had a dog named Duke. He hated water and avoided it except the stuff in his bowl. Water that moved was beyond him.
I love to walk in summer rain now and as a kid. I remember that when the rain fell after a long hot spell, it would puddle in the road and get warm from the heat of the asphalt. It was like wading in bath water. And it smelled wonderful!
Thanks for bringing back those memories.

Hi Caryn,
I didn’t think there were fan types when I was a kid. I just remember those metal ones with arms. They had a great sound when they spun.
Duke used to swim in the pond right near our house. He even went underwater which eventually caused him to go deaf. None of my dogs liked water. Shauna used to squat to pee in the ocean, but that was it. Gracie is the first one of my dogs not to mind a little rain-big rain-nope.
You are so right about the smell of summer rain!

Can I make a strange request? Got any music to cheer up someone who had to put a cat down today? Yes, that is me. It is heartbreaking when you have to do this. I love my cats, but a day like this… heartbreaking indeed. I hardly know what to do with myself. THank you.

Sara,
I am so very sorry. I know exactly how you feel, and my heart goes right out to you. Hope this helps!

Perfect… thank you! And I knew you’d know that.

I haven’t been well for about a week of two and though I read the posts, I don’t have the energy to answer. Thanks for putting the Rainbow Connection on for Sara, and Sara, condolences for your loss. We never jumped thru sprinklers… near the beach town I lived on it was only a mile wide…we did as teens run in the rain. It’s been warmer these last few days, and I venture out to swim, but I’m asleep quite a lot.

Lori,
I’m sad that you are sick. I know how debilitating it gets for you. It is a good thing you can still swim-that will help!
You missed a wonderful summer afternoon without a sprinkler.
The heat is headed my way with the temp due to hit 88° by Friday
