“It’s always the badly dressed people who are the most interesting.”

I’m outside on the deck where a wonderful breeze is keeping me cool. When I went inside to get my mac and read my e-mail, I was hot and sticky in no time, even in the still shady part of the house. Today is going to be a scorcher, 88°, the hottest day yet, but if the breeze stays on the deck, so will I.

I wore my new sandals yesterday so I could start breaking them in before my trip. I bought a pair of Chacos with a great strap design. It reminded us of the 60’s and the bottoms of our pant legs which had cloth with similar designs sewn on them while we wore matching headbands. I also remember a great vest with a bit of fringe, influenced I suspect by Donovan. Those days were great for clothes with giant flowers and brilliant colors. Fringe was just a perk.

It was back then I started wearing sandals. As a kid, I wore sneakers all summer, different colors when I was little and white ones when I was a teenager. In Africa we wore sandals all the time. After I retired, I wore sandals well into November or December. I just added socks on the really cold days. I haven’t gone back to fringe yet but who knows?

When I was younger, I’d see old men and women wearing the most God-awful clothes . The colors and patterns clashed, and I’d shake my head and wonder how they couldn’t notice. Those stripes definitely didn’t match those plaids. Men were the worst as women still retained a bit of fashion sense despite their ages, but their dresses were ugly and so were their shoes.

I’m at that age now, but my clothes more closely resemble the clothes of my youth. I have flowery, bright shirts, cool sandals and comfy pants missing only that strip of cloth.

I did a buy a dress recently as I needed one for a family event. It will come with me on my trip just in case. With it, I wore sandals. It felt strange wearing a dress as it has been so long that any event necessitated wearing one. The dress has flowers.

I used to wear clogs all summer and there were no heals left on them by early autumn 🙂 But occasionally I did have sandals. I´m a sandal man now though but I usually buy those that looks much like jogging shoes in their style.

I´ve almost always dressed in darker colors and I guess I always will, I never wear white since I can´t stay clean for more than a couple of minutes 🙂 🙂 🙂

Have a great day at the deck!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I wore leather clogs to work as they were comfortable for walking, and I did a lot of walking.

I love sandals. They give my feet a sense of freedom. I still like brighter colors.

The day got much too hot, even on the deck so I came inside to the air conditioning. The night is much cooler.

    Hi Kat,
I used to wear Keds sneakers as a kid. Always red ones because Shecky the pet raccoon would not follow on the leash if I didn’t. Later on it was sandals and 60’s clothes. I didn’t do fringe, though, because it got caught in stuff and annoyed me. Now, I wear Crocs flip-flops in yellow and bright pink. I do have one denim jacket with fringe but I don’t know why since I never wear it. For the rest, bright colored tops and denim jeans. I’ve decided that denim is a neutral color and goes with everything.
It’s 85 here now and a bit cloudy. It’s not hot enough to turn on the AC yet though it might get that way later on. Rocky the dog is sleeping on the couch in a position to catch the fan breeze. He’s pooped from holiday cook-outs. Me, too.
    Enjoy your day!

      Hi Caryn,
Me too-I was a Keds kid. I think we all were. As to which color, I know I had red at one point but I think I alternated the colors. I remember a navy pair too.

I love flip flops for around the house or down the street to my friends. They are comfy as anything. I had a pair of crocs but didn’t like them, found them too hot.

It ended up being around the same temperature here, and it got muggy as the day went on. Gracie and I came inside to the air-conditioning. She didn’t want to go out at all-she doesn’t like the heat.

      Thanks-I loved the day!

Flowers? From dem Hippie Days I bet. You ARE getting more and more anxious for the departure date, I can tell. When we got back to our hotel Sunday some station was running a marathon of the Twilight Zone. You’d be surprised how timeless some of Serlings stuff is today. I found it after dinner back over here waiting for the fireworks to begin. I think we watched 12 episodes at least 5 I’d never seen. That makes it more fun.

      Z&Me,
Yup, hippy me in my huge flowers! You are so right. The time is passing far too slowly. I want to get there. I wish the training ended earlier than the end of August.

I watched a few of those Twilight Zone episodes. That still remains one of my favorite TV shows. He was a brilliant writer.

It’s a scorcher for me today. I always dressed hippyish as a teen, and I never cared to fit into the fashion mode, which disturbed my parents, as they owned a woman’s retail clothing store. Now, I have to wear what is most comfortable for my feet for shoes, since I broke my knee a few years ago. I dress for comfort, although when I go out I do like to dress up a bit, since I have a collection of vintage clothes and jewelry. I guess I’m sort of a weird mix! When I was small my mom got those dancekin shorts and tops that didn’t have to be ironed, I must have had keds, sandals, and of course bathing suits. My aunt had a children’s clothing store, so I was quite well outfitted as a child. Then when I went away to college I discovered second hand ( thrift stores) and even today they are the place I like to buy most of my clothes.
For quite some time, and even now I wore black frequently. I say it’s not maudlin, it’s all the colors mixed together, and everything matches black..
Now I am wearing pajama bottoms and tee and weird sandals, but I don’t have to leave the house. Besides, this is Berkeley and almost anything goes.
    Waving in the heat,
    Lori

      Lori,
I had no favorite style when I was a kid. We wore uniforms to school through high school so I didn’t do a lot of clothes shopping. In college, we wore comfy clothes but weren’t allowed to wear pants until I was a junior when they changed the rules.

Now I love wearing t shirts and comfy pants around the house, and I don’t look a whole lot different when I go out!

Sorry, Lori, but as a physics guy I can’t stand by while you do that. Black is the ABSENCE of all colors. White is ALL COLORS in equal amounts. If you think about it, when you shine WHITE light into a prism, what do you get? A rainbow of ALL COLORS.

      Nice try, though.

I agree, wearing a dress makes me feel very uncomfortable, especially with very large flowers.

I never liked wearing sandals. I guess I am a tenderfoot because I don’t like having the leather against my skin and wearing sox with sandals seems like an oxymoron. When going to the pool I will wear flip flops, but somehow the thought of my feet sticking out of my shoes when not going into water, just seems weird. I have photos of me at two or three wearing sandals with socks. My mother didn’t want to take any chances of my catching a cold even in the summer.

Like all kids of the 50s I wore black hightop Keds. We called them sneakers instead of tennis shoes. In those days we only had two choices of sneakers. We could buy Keds or Converse. If you were a basketball player than you had to have Converse. Now I wear upscale sneakers, New Balance. I don’t run but they fit better because they come in various widths.

Here the temperature is forecasted to reach 101 degrees this afternoon. It’s 88 here by nine or ten in the morning. Enjoy the cool weather while you can.

      Rob,
I love flip flops but find they don’t have enough support for walking long distances which is why I bought the new sandals. I wore Birkenstock sandals for years, but they too don’t have what I wanted. The new Chacos have so many straps my feet stay secure without any effort on my part.

When it got really cold and snowy, I didn’t care how they looked. I needed socks with my sandals.

All the boys I knew also wore the hightop sneakers (our name for them too). Mostly it was Converse which was made near us and had a cheaper retail store.

The Chacos too are upscale. I have a pair of sneakers but for the life of me I can’t remember which brand.

ohh i almost missed this topic!
I love sandals and often wonder about fashion sense, i apparently didn’t receive any. i like to be comfortable and really never think about clothes unless i have to go to a funeral, one more reason i avoid them. i do believe strangely dressed people are always the most interesting!

      splendid,
I’m with you in comfort being the priority unless it is an event demanding dressy clothes and those are few and far between. I have a wedding in October, and that will be it for a while. It seems I may have to buy a new dress. The one I just bought is too summery.
