“Health food may be good for the conscience but Oreos taste a hell of a lot better.”

I sort of know how Dorothy felt when she left Kansas and landed in the wonderful land of Oz. Yesterday was dismal, cloudy and damp with periodic rumblings of thunder. Today is gorgeous, warm and sunny, with a lovely breeze. Right away I hauled out my cleaning supplies and cleaned off the layers of pollen from the deck table and chairs then I brought out my coffee and papers. It was my first morning this season on the deck.

I noticed the birds aren’t around. It seems they’re not liking the new seed I bought so it’s back to Agway later today. I’ll put blinders on as that’s also my gardening store. I watered the deck plants while I was out there and rearranged a few candles on the trees. Gracie was with me a while then came inside for her morning nap. Fern is in the sun by the door, and I have no idea where Maddie is.

The one constant in my life has always been Oreo cookies. They have never let me down. When I was young, I could always count on my mother buying them every Friday night when she grocery shopped. My sisters, sitting together on the back steps, used to open them carefully so as not to break the wafers then they’d scrap off the cream with their teeth, the best method of all for eating the cream. The wafers went to the dog. I can still remember how the cream looked with teeth marks across it, almost like ruts on a wintry country road. I am an original Oreos fan though I do like the double stuffed. The orange ones at Halloween just don’t seem right. I know they taste the same, but my eyes tell me differently. I found a drink that tastes just like an Oreo cookie and a cookie on the rim is the garnish. It’s a bit of heaven here on Earth.

They sold Oreo´s here for a while last year but now I can´t find them any longer. We swedes do like new thing especially when it comes to electronic things, but we seems to be extremely conservative when it comes to cookies 🙂 🙂

We have a similar cookie over here that doesn´t taste as strong as an oreo does and it´s hard for a new cookie to compete against that one. It also comes with a strawberry jam filling.

Otherwise our favorite is a similar cookie but with hazelnut cream filling. I love that one but since I really need to loose weight it´s banned in my home at the moment 🙂 🙂 🙂

They had promised sun from early morning here today and so far we´ve had very little of it 🙂 But no rain and fairly coo, weather made a perfect day for walking and to mow the lawn.

    Have a great day!

I never thought about cookies and being conservative. Maybe it is, as you say, the taste is too strong. Hydrox which isn’t made here any more was like an Oreo but not as chocolaty.

I bought Oreos a while back but they were to go with my drink. My friends and I like to try new ones and an Oreo fit the bill perfectly.

The sun dropped in and out all day.

  2. Kat,

I thought your Mom was a Hydrox cookie person and not Oreo? Maybe that was later on.

They are still one of my favorites, especially double-stuff.

My dad was the Hydrox man, but that was when he was much older and we were all gone from the house. He loved to dunk them.

    Hi Kat,
I was a Hydrox fan, too. The cookie part was not as sweet as Oreo and I liked it better. They were back for a little while but the recipe had been changed and they didn’t taste the same. I guess they’re gone again.
The local chocolatier does a chocolate dipped Oreo that is very nice. Comes in both dark and milk chocolate.
Beautiful day here. Sun, cooling breeze, smell of newly mown lawn that I didn’t have to mow. Life is good.

      Hi Caryn,
I preferred Oreos to Hydrox but wouldn’t turn a cookie down-I ate my dad’s Hydrox when I =visited.

I too buy the chocolate covered Oreos at the local candy store. I love them!

I heard lawns being mowed today. On weekdays, they are usually lawn services mowing, but on the weekends, it’s the house owners.

The day started beautifully but got chillier and I just had to close the window as the breeze is a bit too chilly.

Kat, I thought seeing those Tornadoes in Springfield you’d be heading out of harms way. Maybe a trip to Florida until Mother Nature returns to normal.

    • katry Says:

They are far away from me. Like you, I’m in hurricane territory.

I wonder what normal is now for Mother Nature.

The Oreo is the best cookie in the world. My mother would occasionally buy Hydrox or some other brand that was usually on sale. But my taste buds could always discern the difference. I am an Oreo purist. I eat them just as they come from the package. I don’t dunk them in milk or take them apart. On my deathbed I will ask for Oreo cookies and savor the flavor of the chocolate and creme filling on my tongue as I pass away into eternity.

    • katry Says:

I don’t dunk or take them apart either, never have.

They are a perfect cookie and like you I thought Hydrox was a poor second.

I was a Pepperidge Farm gal.. used to buy these cookies called Milanos or Lido cookies –something like that and see if I could eat the outside until I reached the chocolate on the inside. Now, I am a graham cracker adult and MUST have them in order to go to sleep. Did I say adult? The day was splendid and took Meow out while she sunned, and I walked thru the garden. I did post a Youtube version of the Oreo Cookies Song.

    • katry Says:

I found a Mint Milano drink, an adult cookie so to speak! I too like many of the Pepperidge Farm cookies and Mint Milano is on the list.

      Waving back!

I’m going to whisper here since no one will believe me, but I truly think that Newman O’s are as good as Oreos, and this is coming from a real Oreo fan. And the best thing is that you get to combine ‘health food’ and Oreos. :<) Oh, and I take the top of with my teeth and then scrape the cream. Yum. I have some in the freezer I may go get right now!

    • katry Says:

I haven’t ever tried Newman O’s, but now I will with your endorsement. Is it rationalizing combining cookie and healthy?
