Happy Birthday, Peace Corps
Today is the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps. We celebrate the service of over 200,000 past and current volunteers in a total of 139 countries. Volunteers serve for 27 months but their service is ever lasting, a life-defining experience.
Joining the Peace Corps was the best decision I ever made.

Kat, I think I can speak for all your blogging friends when I say that we appreciate your work in trying to make the world a better place…

Coleen,
I thank you so much. I learned you leave a place better than you found it.

I agree with Colleen. I like your comment “I learned to leave a place better than when you found it” A high school friend of mine,( who I keep in touch with), after college joined the Peace Corps and spent many years as a member. I remember before she left she had to have all her wisdom teeth taken out. I’m sure the tooth fairy was very generous with her.

Lori,
Before I left, my dentist said my wisdom teeth were there but not to worry. I should have them taken out when I get home, and I did.

Bubba,
The Peace Corps bill was signed into law on March 1, 1961 by John Kennedy.

Not my thing, but I tip my hat to all the brave and adventurous Americans who took up JFK’s challenge to make this a better world. My ex-wife enlisted twice(at ages 21 and 61!)and my younger daughter was a PCV in Bangladesh. To every current and former PCV… well done, and thanks!

Jay,
I’ve always wanted to do it twice, just as your ex-wife did, but medical issues eliminate me. It’s wonderful that your daughter became a second generation volunteer.
It was an amazing experience.
