“You can’t teach people to be lazy – either they have it, or they don’t.”

Here I sit wearing a sweatshirt, flannel pants and socks with my slippers. It’s cold out, 28°. Earlier, Gracie and I braved the elements so I could get coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts. I like my coffee with cream, and I had none so we bundled up, Gracie and I, and made the trek. Newspapers read best with coffee in hand.

The air is clear, the way it is on cold days in winter. The sun is shining and the sky is the bluest of blues. Goldfinches are at my feeders. The wind is blowing, and one of the feeders is swaying. The birds sway with it. Brown leaves at the end of branches do their own winter dance and blow in all directions. Today is a day best enjoyed inside the house with a book and some music.

Some days I’m lazy. I don’t make my bed because I already know I’ll take a nap. The only cleaning I do is with the sleeve of my sweatshirt. Dinner is often crackers and cheese or a melted cheese sandwich. Often I spend most of the day curled on the couch with a good book. Once I start reading a book which grabs my attention, I can’t stop. I resent any intrusion such as a phone call or a knock at the door.

At Border’s, I bought a couple of books, an old scifi movie, a CD, a game and a few stocking stuffers for next Christmas. All of them help define me in some way. Reading has been one of my greatest pleasures since the words finally made sense to me when I was little. The scifi movie is from the 50’s, The Invaders from Mars, one of my all time favorites. I bought the most recent Carolina Chocolate Drop CD, the one which won the Grammy for most traditional folk album. The game is a word game, Pairs in Pears, a game similar to Bananagrams. I love word games and have for as long as I can remember. The stocking stuffers I won’t mention as they are destined for the stockings of some of my family and friends who read Coffee every day. Each year I start my hunt for the best stocking stuffers right after Christmas. I’m behind this year because of the surgery but I’m working on catching up. It was from my mother I got the Christmas shop all year gene, and I always think of her when I buy a stocking stuffer in January or February.

Well, I’m done. I have a book waiting.

HA! You have summer temps over at Yours, we only had -5,9F here this morning and we never even reached 28 🙂 🙂 🙂 But we had no wind and the sun shined all day. We´re in for another nasty cold night they say.

I´ve had one of those lazy days today even if my dogs tried to change my mind. But I never got to read any book, I looked on the world cup in slalom on tv instead 🙂

Invaders from Mars is one of the best ever! I remember how scared I was after seeing that one for the first time :-):-)They don´t make them like that any longer 🙂

    Have a great day now!

      Christer,
I guess everything is relative. Zoey freezes at 50° and you laugh at my 28°.

Your world cup is quite like my book-both of us stay preoccupied and we love what we’re doing.

No, they don’t make them like that any more, but we’re in luck as there are so many around.

Isn’t today your traditional breakfast out day?!?

    What gives?

      S,
My friend, with whom I go to breakfast with each Sunday, called at 6:30 to say her stepfather had died during the night so we wouldn’t be meeting. He had been her stepfather since she was 9 or 10.

The Drops’ newest is pretty good. I do like Dona Got A Ramblin’ Mind a bit more though.
They played in town last March and again in Madison during the summer:

By the way, I hear that Justin Robinson (fiddler) is leaving the group.

      John,
These are wonderful pictures, but yours usually are. You obviously had no problem taking them which surprised me as they are not usually allowed during any sort of performance. The close-ups are amazing.

Maybe, given the Grammy, he’ll reconsider.

        Thanks Kat,

Festival season’s just around the corner,,,, OK, down the street>
It will be wonderful to sit on the grass and listen to performers again. We’ve already got 5 festivals lined up and Sing Out!’s summer listing hasn’t even been published yet.

Didn’t Borders slide into Chapter 11? I thought I read that in our local paper. So pleased you’re helping them climb from the bottomlands. We have one in Orlando. I can’t read the morning news without coffee either. This coming week is the first of vacationers who grab a night or two here at the house and travel Florida, all from the mid west freeze zone; one couple from the UP if they can plow out, she wrote; and a couple from D.C. who are regulars although wife was diagnosed with bone cancer so this will be a special visit. I think they arrive around mid March. Think Spring!

Fortunately our Borders is staying open. There’s just somethin’ about a real bookstore.
I love the old, used book stores. Finding the treasures always makes for a pleasant afternoon.

        John,
I really wish mine was. We do have a Barnes and Nobel, and there are actually two independent book stores still making it here. I should buy there to keep them around as the one in my town folded after over 12 years being opened. The owner said she couldn’t compete any more.

Parnassus is exactly what you described. It is a wonderful store with piles of books all over.

      Z&Me,
Yes, it did and my Borders is one which is closing. They had a sale starting on Saturday, and I had a gift card to use; of course, I spend the worth of the gift card doubled.

I think spring so often I’m surprised Mother Nature hasn’t heard the vibes.

Hmmm, I’ve been rather lazy for more than a few days. The sun will peek out and then it’s rainy again. Looking thru my records just a few ago I have a few oddities, one is a Ruth Etting Record, one is a record of Brazilian Protest Songs… and then there are some weird ones made by Victrola or Victor with only one side of the record having songs.. some date back from the early 1900’s. Some day this lazy person should put them all in order.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      John,
I love lazy days, and I have another coming tomorrow then it gets busy for a few days. I’m taking a Mac course which is 10 hours starting next week and the dog has her well dog visit at the vets. The first week in March is busy right up to the surgery. The weekends seem to be the only lazy days left.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Lori,
What neat records you have. I didn’t think anyone nut me knew Ruth Etting. Doesn’t every home have a Brazilian protest record?

It sounds like a perfect job for a lazy person.
