Chelsea Morning: Joni Mitchell
I still remember the first time I heard Joni singing. It was from this album, Clouds, which remains my favorite. It was with me in Africa and was played so often the heat wreaked havoc on the tape, but I didn’t mind. I’d patiently rewind the cassette using my Bic pen. It was always worth the effort. Okay, I’ve played this before, but I feel like playing it again. I just love the imagery in this song. The oranges are always green to me, as they were in Africa.

I remember the first time I saw Joni at Carnegie Hall. She was a tiny, as our seats were so far back, but her voice was filled the hall. Her laughter, and speaking also had everyone enthralled. Oh, such memories…

Lori,
I have never seen her live so I’m a bit jealous. Your description is perfectly wonderful.

My next door neighbor did a wonderful immitation of this Joni song. It was a hit at all our neighborhood parties. Close your eyes and it was her.

Z&Me,
I think I would chose her too for an imitation.

My daughter (who turned me on to your site) and I differ over the best version of this song. She sides with you in favor of Joni Mitchell, while I always liked the Judy Collins rendition. Can’t really lose with either. Best wishes.

Bob,
Nope, I agree you can’t lose with either. Both Sides Now is one Joni song where I think Judy does better.
Happy Weekend!

Thanks, Joni has one of the best female voices this country has ever produced. I have loved her for over forty years, yet the songs and her renditions still sound clear and fresh today as they did when I was young.

Flyboy,
I too have loved her for over forty years. When I play the Clouds album, I am reminder of why she has long been my favorite.
I swear I played this just about every night.

The best oranges are green here too in the Philippines. They are just the best I’ve ever had.
I agree on that ‘crossing the line’ into old age. I hadn’t realized how old I appear now. Most of my life I have never really taken much note of how I looked, as I peered into the mirror to shave every morning. Just the other day, the guy looking back surprised me. I honestly didn’t recognize him. LOL Well, that’s the way life is supposed to be. I wonder if I took the treatment, how I would look at 800 or a 1,000! I don’t relish the thought of having to shave than many more time. 50 has been plenty so far, and if I can get away with 20 more years of it, I’ll be happy.

Carl,
The green ones were always so sweet. I remember buying them from women on the street. They would use razor blades to cut off the top and a bit of the sides of the orange so we could suck out the sweet orange juice. They were smaller but oh so delicious.
My head says about 30 maybe but my face puts me well along on the bad side of 50.

sorry, I thought I was commenting on your writing before.
Joni has always been a favorite of mine also, with Both Sides leading the pack.

Carl,
I knew what you meant on the earlier comment.
Both Sides takes a second to this song for me.
